Have you read this?

Just came across this post the other day.  It really, really upset me! I guess it's gone viral.

https://onesleepymom.com/2012/01/13/friday-freakout-5-reasons-not-to-breastfeed/

Her logic is so ridiculous!  Garr!

And her response to the backlash:

https://onesleepymom.com/2013/02/19/because-i-dont-care/

On the one hand, I don't want to care--she was obviously trying to provoke people, get attention, whatever.  But man!  It makes me really mad.  And sad.

Re: Have you read this?

  • I just learned a few weeks ago about studies that have been performed on breastmilk and some neat info that has come to light.

Baby's saliva on your breast triggers certain components of milk to be produced that are specific to his/her needs. Pumped breastmilk, though superior to formula, does NOT provide the antibodies and specific nutrient that your specific baby needs. Cool, huh?

There's also a difference between milk produced for male children and female children. In essence, exclusively pumped milk is generic, but if you BREASTfeed, your milk has components specific to your child's needs.

Kudos to all the exclusive pumpers out there. I know your job is much harder than a nursing mom's, and I'm not downplaying your efforts or the good you're doing for your baby. I just find it so neat that the baby to breast connection is so influential upon the milk we produce!

  • I bet she's just jealous of the moms who could breastfeed. I'm not saying that to be mean though. She also sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about; very uneducated.

If you read number 4 of the "because I don't care" post, she is outing herself. Idiot.

It also sounds really MUDdy. She sickens me.

Ooo! And, did you know that if you breastfeed for a total (not necessarily all at once) of 5 years, your risk of having breast cancer goes down significantly?! I thought it was about 60%, but I'm probably wrong.

I didn't know there was a certain amount of time attached to it (although it makes sense).

  • EllaHella: I know, but I couldn't help myself!  You're right, though.

I didn't know that about the genders!  I wonder what that means for me...I have one of each! :p

  • People are really stupid.  First of all, breasts aren't like your hands or your anus, yeah there are microbes everywhere, but not all of them are bad and some mild exposure won't kill - infact it will even help the baby!  And so long as you are bathing daily, keeping yourself encased in clean clothing/underwear it's just not like that...at all....

Harmful bacteria can however grow all over your kitchen, assumably where she is processing her bottles, half of home kitchens would not receive grades of "A" in health inspection https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20100902/is-your-kitchen-as-clean-as-a-restaurants.

Further, I know a girl who is 12 years old and her mother breastfed her until she was over 2 years.  She remembers the taste and the experience fondly, her mother even had a portrait of her breastfeeding painted (a little much for me, but hey to each their own).  So the whole idea that it somehow traumatizes all teens is ludicrous.   There is no way not to traumatize your teenager. No matter how hard you try to be cool, or neutral, or whatever, something you do will humiliate them, that's just natural.

Also, I don't spend my time out shopping or at restaurants monitoring the activity of others, and I doubt most people do.  I have never noticed anyone breastfeeding in public - maybe it's just me and I am more tolerant than others. The other day I did see someone pumping in a restroom and it actually made me angry that the institution I work for didn't have a place that wasn't a public bathroom to do that.  So until places can have designated places to nurse, whip 'em out.  Let the prudes gasp, and the rest of us normal people won't notice you nourishing your baby.

I might add I'm not a militant breast-feeding advocate.  I just think that the worst thing about being pregnant or a new parent is other people's unsolicited advice and judgment.  Do what's right for you and leave everyone else out of it.  That's what makes me mad/sad about this article.  Well that and the fact whatever science she was exposed to as a child either failed or was grossly inadequate.

  • Where is the data to support this?  What is your source?
  • Aw, it's cute because she's so stupid.

    .

Also, as an AP-styled parent, I have discovered that a lot of the emotional/bonding benefits people tout from breastfeeding I personally don't think have much to do with breastfeeding.  I am amazed when my kids react in a way that I have been schooled to think would be a result from breastfeeding when both my kids were barely BF.

I know plenty of crappy moms who breastfed. Love is from your soul, not your breasts. It just might take a longer for your hormones to catch up with your heart. Glad you overcame it. I struggled really bad for a long time (still do).

Im kinda disagreeing with PPs about her being jealous. I think she is just really misinformed and juvenile about the whole thing.

I agree.  I wasn't even the least bit upset after reading the blog post.  She has no idea what she is talking about. Taking an informal poll of kids to see what they think about breastfeeding is not exactly material worthy of peer review.  I mean, they are embarrassed of their parents regardless of FF/BF, of course they are going to squirm if you start talking to them about nursing.

  • I'm surprised she hasn't been sued by the real Stephanie Seymour-Brant for using her name. The rest... MUD
  • Her first point about your children being horrified at the idea of you BF them, is like suggesting everyone should go through IVf to get pregnant, because otherwise one day your kids will be horrified that their parents had sex. Or everyone should have c-section otherwise kids will have to think about coming out of their Mum's vagina. I mean, she's just ridiculous.

I have zero intention of living my life to avoid my children being horrified at my choices.

I agree!  Oh yeah, because a 15 year old boy said...come on.  That is absolutely ridiculous that you should gauge your parenting off of what a group of adolescents may or may not have lied about...There were so many logical fallacies in her post...she doesn't deserve the traffic she's getting but I just couldn't help myself.

The attitude is just so horrible.  I just can't get beyond the "breastmilk is fine but breastfeeding is gross."

  • Oh.  While I don't agree with her post I do agree with her, "People must be bored to care so much what I think" attitude. Is she a VIP or just some woman with a blog?Unless she is a person that people look to for advice it's her life, her kids and who cares?  If she has a wide area of influence and followers then she is being irresponsible, but otherwise, meh.

  • I couldn't even be bothered to read this whole thing. She's just useless. I noticed she wrote a "sponsored" post that mentions nothing about what she's being sponsored for. Sounds like she's pretending her audience is bigger than it is. She's full of it. I doubt anyone actually follows her rumblings.

  • Who cares what she thinks? Even if she was someone important (which from looking at her crappy blog, I'm assuming she is not and I actually LOL'ed at the fact that she has a media kit link), she's allowed to have that opinion. It's not like she is the only person on the planet that feels this way (I'm not saying I do, I'm just saying that it's not an original thought). I'm sure she's probably not the only person to ever make a blog post about it. Don't let her ruin your day.

  • Seriously dying to tell this woman what a complete and total idiot she is... I had to stop reading comments because she's literally making me cringe. She said she doesn't let her baby put its hands in its mouth. And uses hand sanitizer on her 6 month old... She's total Internet MUD!!!!!
