C-sections

scheduled c-section

I am scheduled for a c-section in less than two weeks because my baby is breech and due to being high risk and other factors the doctors will not attempt to turn her and it's pretty unlikely that she will flip.  I have a few questions for you ladies who have already gone through this:

1. Do you recommend buying a belly band or something like this for post-op?  I see some online for $50-$70 and was wondering if it was worth the cost.

2. How long did it take before you were able to exercise?  I'm not expecting to be back at the gym in 4 weeks because I'm sure I'll be exhausted with caring for a newborn, I was just wondering how long it really takes.

3. What type of underwear do you recommend buying for after the surgery?  Something hi-waisted to go over the incision?  Or low rise to go under the scar?

Thanks in advance, and if you have any other tips or suggestions I'd love to hear them.  I'm so happy I found this board, I've been reading other postings and I feel a little better about what to expect now.

Re: scheduled c-section

  • Motherhood Maternity makes these underwear that have a band that you can fold. Those were AWESOME. I did not have a band or anything. My doctor cleared me for exercise at eight weeks.

  • I've had 4 scheduled c-sections.

    1. Ask your OB to order you one in the hospital.

    2. I am not allowed to exercise before 8 weeks PP. That's when I've been cleared each time.

    3. I wear regular bikini underwear. Have never had an issue.

My tip/suggestion is to get up and moving as soon as you are allowed. It will help with the healing.

  • I've been wearing maternity underwear and those are pretty comfortable.

  • I wear bikini undies post cs and use that band to hold a maxi pad over my incision to monitor/catch drainage.  I never wore a band.  GL!

  • No bands for me.

Doc cleared me for light exercise at 6w and said if it hurts, stop.

Biggest granny panties you can find. If they dont touch the bottom of your boobs, they're not big enough. Mine hit my belly button and I though I was going to die. That's where the top of my ute was. No fun putting elastic there. I loooooved the hospital mesh panties too.

  • 1. I didn't have one after my first c/s and actually hadn't heard about bands till the Bump, but I am planning to talk to my OB about one.

    2. I don't remeber, but probably 6 or 8 weeks.

    3. I wore the mesh undies from the hospital while there and for the first few days at home. I had purchased granny panties, but found them very uncomfortable. I don't know if my incision was just higher than most, but I wore my regular (ultra-low rise) undies and they were fine.

I definitely recommend getting up and walking around as soon as you can, but not overdoing it. I felt great when I got home and definitely overdid it, which lead to bleeding longer and hurting later.

  • 1-Buy one of those ab-bands for excercising with- same thing, less $$.

2- Everyone is different. You'll know when you're ready, but take it slow. 2 years later I still have a lot of trouble working out my lower abs because of the csection, its like my muscles still haven't reconnected to each other; and I work out 4-6 days a week.

3- Granny panties all the way! My scar is pretty low, I don't think I could have found anything low enough to go under it comfortably.

  • I'm headed in for my third c-section tomorrow, and agree -- granny panties!  Could not live without them. There is no underwear that would comfortably fit otherwise -- that incision will be pretty low.  I also put a pad horizontally in my undies to keep the incision extra protected, and find it helps a lot.  And I wear the mesh panties for as long as I can, and definitely steal some for home!

I wouldn't exercise until you are cleared.  It's not only about the incision, it's also about just the general postpartum process and the bleeding you'll have afterward.  If you overdo it, that will pick up again.
