  I have a tattoo on my lower back and I was able to get one.  I think it is the specific position of the tattoo.  Next time you are at your doctor ask him/her about it...they should be able to give you an idea if your tat will be a problem or not.

  My friend had her baby about 3 mos ago, she's a piercer, and her husband is a tattoo artist. She has a full back piece. I was in the room when she had her baby. When the Anes md came in to admin the epi, I asked if there really was any restriction on epis with tattoos. He said that there weren't and it all depended on the anes. Some won't do it simply because its a bit harder to tell if you've gotten it into the correct spot. He said that there is no medical reason why an epi can not be administered.

  I have a tattoo on my lower back and got an epidural just fine. No one even said anything to me about it.

  I have a tattoo on my lower back and had to have a csection with a spinal and everything was just fine.

  I'm an anesthesiologist, and there is no problem with putting an epidural in through a tattoo, unless it is fresh and infected.  A healed tattoo doesn't make it any harder to place an epidural, and the medical literature states that there is no danger of tracking "ink" through the needle to the epidural space.   In my opinion, any anesthesiologist who refuses to place an epidural solely on the basis of a tattoo being present is either ignorant or lazy.
