I know there is some talk out there regarding tattoos and not getting an epidural. I was just curious if anyone had any experiences to share regarding that. I am concerned being that I have a back tattoo.. I have found a few articles online stating that some times you can, sometimes not depending on the anesthesiologist. Thanks for any input!

I'm an anesthesiologist, and there is no problem with putting an epidural in through a tattoo, unless it is fresh and infected. A healed tattoo doesn't make it any harder to place an epidural, and the medical literature states that there is no danger of tracking "ink" through the needle to the epidural space. In my opinion, any anesthesiologist who refuses to place an epidural solely on the basis of a tattoo being present is either ignorant or lazy.
