So we had our 6m appointment today and the pedi gave us the go ahead to start solids. I think we are going to try oatmeal instead of rice because of the arsenic (?) but I'm kind of at a loss as to how to proceed after that.
Does anyone have any resources they recommend on how to go about introducing foods, making your own, which are the best, etc.?
I'd also love any input on any specific 'must-have' feeding items (special spoons, bibs, bowls etc.) I haven't prepared for this day at all!!
ETA: To give this a multiples twist - what are you thoughts on sharing a spoon/bowl for both babies instead of juggling two?
Re: Starting Solids!?
The website www.wholesomebabyfood.com was a very helpful resource for that stage! We actually did purees first, then oatmeal, then rice (just since cereal can be constipating and that way when you introduce it you can mix it with peaches or pears or something else that counteracts the constipating effects).
Feeding items; We LOVE the baby bjorn bibs with the pocket and wish we'd started using them earlier! We've tried many kinds but those are our all-time favorites.
One bowl, one spoon, and from polls I've seen on here before I know that's pretty common with multiples. They share germs all the time anyway and it's so much more practical if they get impatient waiting for their next spoonful.
This is a fun book my brother got for us, and it has helpful suggestions about how to introduce foods. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Homemade-Baby-Food-Planet/dp/1592334237
We did rice cereal first, oatmeal, fruit/veggie purees. I don't like purees, they're so messy. So at this point I'm giving them Cheerios, apple slices to gnaw on, potato pieces, toast, etc. and only do purees for things like spinach and squash. I try to do a non-starchy veggie every day and besides that just whatever is easy or looks fun for them. At this age they are still getting most of their nutrients from BM or formula, so I'm not killing myself worrying about vitamin C or whatever.
We started with one box of rice, but then moved to Oatmeal, too. I buy Earth's best at Target. I like the texture of that one compared to Gerber.
We started with that then slowly added in some veggie purees. Start with the ones labeled 1st foods - usually peas, sweet potatoes, and carrots. I just put some cereal and some veggie in a bowl (bought cheap gladware like bowls at Target) and put a little of both on the spoon.
To start we did just dinner at home, then we had daycare add in lunch. Now they do breakfast (fruit and cereal, yogurt, fruit pieces), lunch (veggie, cereal, finger foods like puffs, mum-mum's, zucchini, butternut squash, chicken breast), and then we do dinner at home similar to lunch. They also have 4 bottles a day - 6 -10 - 2 - and 6:30 before bed.
