Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Tummy sleeping...

I know that everyone has a different opinion and each child is different, but DS2 has been tough for us to break and transition from the RNP. He HATES his PNP and when we lay him down in the crib, we have music on a timer and his mobile. He's fine for about 5 minutes, then he fusses. After about 10 min, he's crying, We let him CIO for 5-10 min before we check on him and once we do that, he's super upset so we take him out and have to calm him down. The only way we can get him back down once he's asleep is if we put him on his tummy. I even tried to roll him on his back and he got super pissed. DH is fine with him sleeping on his tummy and DS1 was a tummy sleeper. I'm just getting super paranoid.

Re: Tummy sleeping...

  • DH likes to sleep on her tummy as well.  She rolls there herself though after I lay her down on her back.  I asked the pedi about it and she said it is fine as long as she does it herself...

  • If you are really worried about it - get an Angel Monitor - it tracks the baby's breathing and if something serious happens and they stop breathing - a monitor goes off! It gives me a peace of mind. It is worth the extra money.

  • I'm putting myself out here and telling you my experiance. I transitioned my girl into her crib from her RNP at 4 weeks and put her on her tummy and she has been a great sleeper ever since. Now I know every baby is different but mine has been a tummy sleeper since then and she's 5 months now. I get paranoid even now but she's been a great sleeper this whole time.

  • Thanks!! DH and I talked about it and we're ordering an Angelcare monitor today to give me a peace of mind. DS1 was a tummy sleeper from 8 weeks on and I was paranoid then, but this time it's worse just because we had a niece pass away when she was 1 month old from SIDS and it has me scared even more now.

  • As long as your baby can move his head fine while he's on his tummy I think it's fine.  I co-sleep and often put him on his tummy, I  just lay awake watching him sometimes to make sure he can turn his head fine.  If he has a little gas he likes it on his tummy.  I would not let him cry it out so young... they are little babies and they only cry if they need something or are upset.  I think you should wait a couple more months on letting them CIO.  just my opinion
  • I allow my 4 month old to sleep on her tummy in her crib but I also have a baby sense monitor and a regular monitor so I can hear her breathing. And she probably would roll into that position on her on. If I did not have these items I would be highly hesitant in allowing her to be in her room, she would still be in her bassinet in our room.
