Natural Birth

Book recommendations

Hi ladies! I'm still in the early stages of researching natural hospital births, and would love book suggestions for myself as well as DH. I'm looking into the Bradley method, but am open to any and all suggestions.

or you're all the way grown,
my promise to you
is you're never alone.
You are my angel, my darling,
my star...and my love will find you,
wherever you are."

Re: Book recommendations

  • Natural Hospital Birth was okay. Worth a read. We both liked The Birth Partner, Simpkin, better though.

For me, I liked Ina May's book. The birth stories are incredible.

  • H and I loved the Bradley method!  I agree with PPs recommendations.  I also recommend "The thinking womens guide to a better birth" by Henci Goer. GL!

  • I second "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way".  I liked this book much more than 'Husband Coached Birthing'.  It's more of a practical guide and is very easy to read.

  • Even if you don't end up preferring to use the Bradley method, the bradley book (Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way) will teach you a lot about the natural courses of labor and different variations of normal. I'd recommend it either way.

Your biggest tool is to know what labor is like and what's normal. Especially variations of normal so you and DH can advocate for more time or different positions, and especially knowing when to go in (ie not going too early which can complicate achieving a natural birth in a hospital).  Become familiar with the circumstances in which you would decline admission if you do go and aren't progressed enough to "safely" stay .

I also very much recommend The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. Easy to pick a chapter that interests you and read it.  It may help you form your desires even more. Once I decided on natural childbirth, I was also led to decisions about cord clamping, standard newborn procedures and preferences for our stay in the hospital.

A side question, but have you considered hiring a doula?

Also, if you can take some sort of childbirth education class (NOT hosted by the hospital!!), I highly recommend it! Whether it's bradley or another natural approach, the class time will be a huge aid to you.
