41 week induction

I learned that our OB/GYN encourages inductions if women go one week past their due date.  I am unsure if they require it, or it is just general practice.  At first, I was excited to have a closer deadline to the birth, but now I am thinking, if it is not medically necessary I dont think I should be induced before 42 weeks.  I am a first-timer (so this could take awhile), and I read that an induction doubles the risk of a c-section.

Any thoughts?

Re: 41 week induction

  • My MW actually won't induce before 42 weeks unless it is medically necessary so it is definitely safe for some women to go to 42 weeks.  I think it requires close monitoring and a careful eye, but you definitely have that option if there is no reason to think you are at risk.  I would talk to your OB/GYN and tell him or her that you are curious about that option because you are hoping to avoid induction and see what they have to say or if they have any specific concerns about you personally going past 41 weeks.  You are definitely entitled to have the conversation with your OB and you are definitely entitled to have the concerns you have.  I would also like to avoid induction if at all possible, so I know how you feel.  My MW told me most women will deliver on their own before 42 weeks, but some FTMs go past 41 weeks.  She won't hesitate to induce if she thinks the pregnancy is unsafe for me or LO at any point though.

  • First remember that induction doesn't necessarily mean induction. Countless women are successfully induced everyday, if that wasn't the case no one would do it. I suggest talking to your doctor about why they choose 41 weeks and if they will let you go to 42 if you feel it necessary. I was induced with DD @ 41w 5d and spent 24 hours in labor and had a successful vaginal birth.

I am delivering this LO at a different hospital (we moved cross country since DD was born) and they don't go over 41 weeks but honestly I am ok with this. What really matters is open communication with your doctor and a decision that you are comfortable with and understand the reasoning behind.

  • The csection rate correlates to much ready your body is.  If you aren't dilating/ effacing, it is very likely you could need a csection, if you are, the odds of the induction working are more in your favor.

i personally wasn't allowed to go past 41 weeks.   But a lot of places will let you if you go for nsts.

  • My Dr told me that studies are showing babies do worse if they go into the 42nd week and she recommends induction during the 41st week.

  • I'm a few days away from 41 weeks and I won't induce unless medically necessary.

  • I think 41 induction is good- because you dont want your baby in there too long  its not healthy for him to be and he will technically "over cook" I learned it in nursing school, and since its just an EDD (estimated) its better for the lo to come out sooner the later for 42 weeks, its just a thought, as a OB/GYN i would listen to them they do it every day and that is your job, I would say it is medically necessary if they say it is, and you are consider full term at 37weeks so in reality the baby is healthy at that age. yes induction is not really naturally but it does not always lead to c-section.  But this is my personal thought- I dont want to even go past 40 weeks but thats me.
  • I just found out my Dr. doesn't let anyone go past 41 weeks! He also won't induce if your less than 3cm, anything less and the induction probably would end in a c-section.

  • My OB also induces at 41 weeks, and I live in Berkeley where it's about as "crunchy granola" as you can get, but I think it's because there are some risks in going too overdue.
