Hip Dysplasia

Today at my boys' one month appt their pediatrician mentioned that he has all of his multiples patients have an ultrasound to look for hip dysplasia to catch it earlier rather than later so it can be dealt with as best as possible.

It caught me off guard since I wasn't expecting it... have any of y'all done this?  Does this seem excessive?  It isn't done in their office, so they won't profit from the procedures - we have to take them to Children's for the ultrasounds...

Just curious if this is normal and if there is any reason not to do it.

Re: Hip Dysplasia

  • We had this done for my boys, and it was explained to me as standard procedure for breech babies (both mine were breech at the time of delivery, though Baby B had flipped from vertex to breech constantly in that last 8 weeks). Given the cramped quarters twins share, it makes sense to me, even for non-breech multiples. Ours was quick and painless, and it's good to know that they don't have any hip problems.

  • We did it because our girls had a variety of risk factors for hip dysplasia (multiples, female, one was breech, one had too little fluid for a while).  The ped was just being conservative because they didn't have any red flags with their exam, but considering it's a non-invasive test (just an u/s) and it's one of those things that if they do have it you want to catch it early, we did it.  It's wasn't a big deal at all.  The one thing they did tell us at the u/s (not while we scheduled it), is that feeding them during the u/s sometimes helps just because it keeps them distracted.  However, we had already fed DDs and it wasn't a big deal.  The u/s was relatively quick and their hips both looked fine.

  • Our pediatrician does it for all breech babies. Baby B had the ultrasound at 6 weeks and he will have an Xray at 6 months. The ultrasound was very fast and easy. I just spoke to him and held his pacifier. He didn't fuss at all!

  • We have hip ultrasounds scheduled for.next month. Someone at the.nicu.said.it.is.because one.was breech, but the ped.said.twins. who.knows..? I am.glad to.know it.is.kind.of standard procedure though.
  • As an aunt that has seen my two year old neice go through hip surgery to correct this because it wasn't found as an infant, I would say absolutely do it if it is offered.  She spent over 6 weeks in a cast from her chest to her ankles that completely immobilized her.  I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

  • The pediatrician I had when my girls were newborns never mentioned it to me; I had no idea about hip dysplasia  until we moved to another state and the new dr mentioned it for Baby B since she was breech at delivery (but never stayed in one position). She was too old for an u/s by the time the new office saw them for their first new patient check up. The dr said we will just keep an eye on it since she seems fine and has passed her physical exams with flying colors, and is running like crazy everywhere.

The new dr said it (dysplasia) can be common in multiples because of the cramped space to grow and typically at least one twin/trip is breech.

I would have definitely had the u/s when B was younger if it would have been offered, even though now I'm pretty sure she's just fine.

  • I just took DD for an u/s of her hips yesterday.  The pedi said this is standard for all breech babies.  It was a quick and easy and she didn't even wake up during it!

  • My twins aren't here yet so I can't speak to that but my oldest had to have one looking for hip dysplacia because he was breech. My understanding is that it was pretty standard.

  • We had the u/s yesterday. Not bad at all. I agree that I thought it was a bit excessive in the beginning. But now after seeing how well they did during it, I'm glad we went ahead and had them tested.
