Whooping Cough?

L has had mild cold-like symptoms for about three weeks. The past few days I've noticed her cough has become more frequent (though it's still pretty occasional) and that her lymph nodes are more swollen. About an hour ago, in between coughs I definitely heard a "whoop" sound of her gasping in air. We will be calling the pediatrician first thing in the morning. I know you all aren't doctors, but do babies/people ever "whoop" if they don't have pertussis? Will there ever be a time that I'm not worried about something as a parent?

Re: Whooping Cough?

  • I don't know the answer to the first one. The answer to your second question is no.

I hope it's not pertussis. Keep us updated!

  • My older kids will have an occasional whoop after a particularly bad coughing spell, but have never had pertussis. Hopefully it was just a funny little noise and nothing serious!

  • My 14 week old son had the same symptoms but also included retraction breathing. He was diagnosed w/ bronchiolitis. It's inflamation of the lower air way but it can be serious for infants. To adults it's just a bad cold but babies can't blow their noses like we can so it can create some problems. Good news is that if it is bronchiolitis, your LO doesn't necessarily have to be hospitalized. They usually don't give meds for this and they tell you to use a cool mist vaporizor and saline drops/aspirator. I'm not diagnosing your child, but I just wanted to give you an idea to run past your doc. I hope this helps and I hope your LO gets better!

  • SO works at a gym for kids aging from 6 weeks to 7 years old. He mostly teaches the 2 to 6 year old classes so you can imagine the germs!! Here lately he has brought home some sick nasties and we have all had a cough and a cold. DD has had that occasional cough as well and that combined with her congestion is freaking me out! No fever or behavior change so doc is keeping out original appt of march 5th...

I'm pretty much asking does LO have a fever or act lethargic...? That was a determining factor on how soon she wants to see us.

  • No fever. L was quite sleepy yesterday but I think we were also going through a growth spurt, so that may have been related.

We went to the doctor's walkin clinic since our ped's was booked full for the day but said she should be seen /eyeroll, they ran a test there to see if it's ACV ? which was negative, so they swabbed for pertussis and we'll find out in 35 days. She was coughing a bit more this morning, but not so much this evening, and besides two raspy gasps this morning, I haven't heard anything close to another whoop, which I'm taking as a good sign. Here's hoping it's just a cold like I originally thought and the whoop was a onetime deal.

  • Oh, and also, you can "whoop" without whooping cough some kids do it when they have croup, and some other things can cause it as well, apparently it's called "stridor."
