BLW and Day Care

We are doing a mostly BLW approach to solids.  And E eats like a champ!  She loves to feed herself, and we have not found anything she won't eat.  She even chowed down on a lemon yesterday (which will be my HDBBD pic tomorrow!)  She has only been doing solids as a dinner meal at home with us.  But at DC yesterday, she stole another kid's blueberry puff snacks and ate 5 of them.  I don't know whether she actually needs that meal, or if she just wants to eat because somebody else is eating.  But I am thinking we ought to start sending her some snacks.  I'd prefer she stick with real foods, rather than packaged foods.  What are some good foods we could send as snacks for her to DC, that she will be able to feed herself, but that DC will be comfortable giving her at 6 months?  What do you do for snacks?  TIA!

Re: BLW and Day Care

  • We have a similar problem or need. DC keeps asking us if we want to bring in pures or cereal for them to spoon feed dexter. He refuses to be spoon fed. At this point he is still mostly practicing too with eating, as very little is making it in.

We are going to start sending cut up sticks of fruit and puffs and Cheerio type cereal. The latter two are ore packaged, but you can get organic versions of them.

I'm impressed how much E has taken to feeding herself!

I don't know about your DC, but I'm pretty sure mine thinks we are kind of weird for not sending in any baby food yet. It is awkward.

  • Yep. We are the weird cloth diaper, BFing parents who aren't sending food yet. Oh well. I think the cut up fruit and veggie sticks are a great idea, but MH thinks it'll be too much work.

  • I always cut up fruit and let LO eat them with his hands (chop a bluberry in half, bananas in fourths, etc), make my own yogurt bites (buy one of those cake decorating tube things, fill with organic yogurt, squirt them onto something and throw them in the feezer), my LO loves the little Plum organic puffs and rice cakes. Now that he is almost 9 months old I even shred chicken, beef, salmon, etc for him and he'll eat it right off of his high chair. I also chop up steamed organic veggies and he will chow down on those too. Yes, it does take time, but you can make a lot of the stuff in bulk and throw it in the fridge or freezer so you don't have to do it daily. I'm kind of a freak though - I love making baby food ;) I also love not having to spoon feed my babies! I very rarely do it unless I puree what we are having for dinner.

  • We don't go to daycare as I'm a SAHM but we're doing BLW for the 2nd time.  Has your dc actually said that they are unwilling to let your LO self feed?  If not start sending some things like:

cooked elbow pasta (with sauce if you think they will deal ok with the mess), snack cup of mandarins (ask that they pour off the juice and dump onto tray as is), cooked carrots (easy to cut into sticks since 6m probably doesn't have great pincer yet), steak diced or left in strips for sucking, banana slices or sticks, leftover squash or zucchini cooked however, 1/2 small can of corn...

  • I wanted to try BLW and this is probably why I'm not going to. I don't see dc being okay with it!

  • Thanks for the ideas ladies!  I don't know why MH is being so resistant.  He is all about wanting to do convenience food.  I hate when we disagree on parenting ideas.

  • I'll say this: with DD I was very strict that I didn't spoon feed her.  Period.  With DS it was a different story.  Sometimes I just needed him fed and for us to get out the door!  He certainly got a good bit of spoon feeding of Greek yogurt and stage 3 baby foods or runny stage ones with a bunch of cereal added.  It didn't make a bit of difference.  Whenever there wasn't a rush he was given food to self feed and he picked up eating just as fast and just as heartily as DD.

I'd say go easy on your self and your LO.  If it works to send baby food don't stress that you'll cause the kid to not be able to self feed.  Just let LO self feed every time it is convenient.
