I am looking into switching to a new OB / hospital and just starting to wrap my brain around what I'd like my birth plan to be so I can choose the right doctor and facility...
I would like to avoid an epidural. I'd like to be mentally present, and I don't want it to inhibit my ability to push. I'm going to get some books on natural childbirth and have plenty more research to do...
But one hospital I am looking at was also talking about Analgesia, which supposedly removes the pain sensation without causing a change in consciousness and without producing the motor block to your legs or abdomen that might affect your ability to push the baby out.
I'm wondering if anyone has heard of Analgesia? Is it an alternative to an epidural? I know it's still not "natural" so I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask, but I'm curious about it and what others think of it...
TIA!

Oh, OK thanks... They made it seem very different.. Guess have alot to learn!
I didn't have any narcotics during labor but they gave me fentanyl after the birth while they were stitching me and it put me into crazy land for like 20 minutes. I kept saying "I feel soooo high right now" and it didn't really even take away the pain, it just made me not care. I don't see how it would have helped much with contractions and the effects of it go right to the baby.
I would definitely ask your health care provider to clarify what they specifically offer.
Like PP said, analgesia is just a general term for pain relievers. Analgesics include everything from Tylenol to narcs to nerve blocks. They can give you small doses of certain medications during labor to "take the edge off", but I don't have any first hand knowledge of what those are. Analgesia would also include a local anesthetic if you needed any sutures after delivery.
Your doctor will be able to tell you what all is available.
