Pre E and still Pregnant vent

So its official... I hate my clinic. I'll be 40 weeks on Thursday, I have officially been diagnosed with pre e, and my OB still won't discuss induction. To make matters worse, they won't discuss it until after 41 weeks but because of how my appointments are scheduled that is still 2wks away! Until this baby decides to make his or her much awaited arrival, I am stuck on bed rest. Even worse, I've been busted for not lying down on bed rest... I can't for too long, the heartburn is too terrible. Honestly, the bed rest is worse on my BP than anything else! I'm going insane with nothing to do!!!!

So I feel like I'm going to be pregnant forever, I'm stuck on the couch with nothing to do, and I'm having constant contractions that are barely making any changes, but keep me awake all night. I feel like I'm losing my mind from lack of sleep and the baby hasn't even been born yet!

Sorry if punctuation is messy I'm on my mobile.

  • I find it very odd that they won't induce you at this point if they've diagnosed pre-e. Have you asked for medication to at least manage your heartburn while you're on bedrest?

  • That's really crazy! What is his reason for not inducing? Preeclampsia can get very dangerous, very quickly. I had it with both pregnancies now and was induced early both times because of it. I hope you are hanging in there. Are you monitoring your BP at home?

  • Good for your OB for not rushing the induction.  That's rare in a doctor.

I know it stinks to be this pregnant, but your doctor is doing what is best for you and your baby.

Usually I'm not in favor of rushing an induction, either, but as others have said, pre-e can get really dangerous really fast, and if she's already at 40w, I don't understand the reason to wait (different story if it's mild pre-e that's under control with bedrest at 32w or something!). When I got pre-e/HELLP, I was admitted with a BP of 130/80. nbd. Within 24 hours, it was 190/120 with medication.

At 39w5d, I guess I don't see the advantage to either mom or baby of keeping LO inside as opposed to starting an induction. If the pre-e gets bad fast, she may end up with an emergency c/s instead, and that is obviously even less desirable than an induction.

OP - don't get me wrong. Your pre-e could continue being mild and be absolutely no problem. I guess it's just my personal history that makes me really jumpy about OBs not always taking pre-e seriously.

  • I guess I figure the doctor is aware of the severity of the pre-e and knows what he or she is doing.  I agree that if her blood pressure is out of control, she needs to be induced, but if bedrest seems to be keeping her BP down and she isn't showing signs of dilation and effacement at this point, I think I agree with the doctor about waiting a bit longer.

I think there are details we don't know about.  OP - how severe is the pre-e?

This.  It concerns me that they aren't talking induction.  I'm not a fan of inductions without a darn good reason, but pre-e is a darn good reason.

This is what I was thinking.

I know how you feel, I am bed resting too but only for the past 4 or 5 days and I can't imagine what mental state I'll be in after this for another week. But I've been pretty propped up on the couch to avoid heartburn.

  • I am 2 cm dilated, and fully effaced, and my bp seems to be staying up around high 140's to 150s over high 80s to low 90s, regardless of the bed rest I have been on for the last four weeks.

I'm just more annoyed and frustrated now. I'm sick of bed rest and everything hurts.

It is the benefit to risk ratio the doctor should be looking at. The dangers of induction are extremely small to a 40w baby & mother vs the dangers of BP being able to skyrocket and cause a mother to start seizing in a matter of very short hours... It isn't something they can just "predict" based on how the mother's BP has been for the last few days... it can go from mild to death with very, very little warning. Removing the placenta (the offending object) is the safest and only "sure fire" way to prevent serious harm to mother & child, and a term baby should not be kept in the womb longer than necessary when a mother is afflicted with it.... it's responsible for 18% of all maternal deaths in the US.... that's a really big number when you account for all of the hundreds of things that can cause a pregnant woman to die.

  • OP, this would bug me too.  I was induced with my son at 37 weeks 5 days because of pre-e.  I was on bedrest at the time which had helped but then my BP went back up (150/80ish) and my dr said that it wasn't worth the risk to continue the pregnancy.  I guess they all have different policies, but I would be asking more questions if I was you.
