Nurseries and Baby Gear

Is a nautical nursery boyish?

Team Green here.  I'm thinking that a nautical look (tan carpet, light blue or tan walls, navy & white accents & wall decor - sort of preppy style) would look pretty & calming.  But all the photos I'm finding online for inspiration are clearly boy rooms.  If LO is a girl, I could easily add in some pink accents if I thought it needed it in bookcase cubby shelves, or changing pad cover or even in some wall art.  But I want to shop & set up as much of the nursery in advance as possible.

Anyone do a nautical look for a girl's nursery that worked?  Would adding some yellow in up front help balance it a bit?

  • Team green also. (We're doing a safari theme with base colors of orange, green, and gray.) I do tend to think nautical is more boyish (my friend who just gave birth to a son went nautical for his nursery, so that biases me probably) but I imagine you could pull it off with pops of other colors and down-playing any soft blues. If you want to stick with water, you could do a sea theme instead and play up aqua greens and maybe coral reef/fish colors instead...

image  The tan can go either boy or girl and then you can add in some blue or pink.

imageI like the navy and lime green.  Not so girly but cute.

  • I think you can totally pull it off for boy or girl.  As you said do the main room now and then add some accents when baby arrives and you know gender.

While not nautical themed we have painted our girls room blue (light, bright blue) and my mom and SIL will be coming to town and doing a full underwater mural.  The rest of the room is beige (carpet, curatins, sheets, change table). So at the moment it looks like we are having a boy (blue and beige) but we feel confident in our choices and once the fish are on the wall and the pink clothes come out it will all make sense!

I don't think it takes much to girl-ify a room!!

  • We have a navy and pink room for our DD. It isn't necessarily nautical but it was intended to be. You can definitely add pink accents and it would look awesome IMO.

  • We are doing a nautical themed nursery for our little guy! I'm getting the bedding from Pottery Barn Kids. And just running with the idea!
Married my BEST FRIEND on December 1, 2007. Started TTC in March 2008. Found out we were expecting our first child in October 2008 - but had a m/c in December 2008 - resulting in a d&e. Met with a RE in May 2009 and set a plan - but conceived unexpectedly on our own! Our precious little Sophia was born on February 9, 2010! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • I am obsessed with this look!
If you go easy on decorating and accessories now, you can add them once you know if it is a boy or girl.  There is no need to have everything decorated before they are born.  If if is a girl you could add some things like in this picture to make it girly.
