When LO is naughty..

What do you do to try to deter the behavior?

Lately DS has been slapping at our faces and biting our collarbones when he's 'cuddling'  We say NO or OUCH and grab his hands when he hits, but apparently, he thinks the words No and Ouch are the most hilarious words ever.  Not sure what else to do to try to let him know not to do something.

  • Redirection for the baby. Asprin for the adult. (Mostly) joking. I'm curious what other people respond with, because the slapping is driving me silly.

    Agree!

Redirecting is the best means of discipline for any child under 2. You simply change what the child is doing with distraction. Also, say "No hitting" firmly.  GL

  • I try to change my tone of voice drastically when I say No, and when I redirect. For example, LO smacks mommy in the face. "No hitting!" very firm, mean face. Then take her hand and rub mommy's face nicely and I so sweetly and quietly, "So soft. Aww, so gentle!"

  • We tap his hand firmly--not enough to hurt but enough to get his attention. We do that while we say no. Then we remove him from the situation if that doesn't work.

  • I say "no" sternly, then "that hurts mama"and remove her hands from my body.

Our little Ev. is a pinching and I swear its her favorite thing to do.  she also thing "oww" is the funniest word in the world. and her little pincher fingers really do hurt!  She also is extremely interested in poking me in the eye.  so I have to really be on guard most of the day :-P

  • Completely ignore it.  No reaction at all.  Any reaction will encourage the same behavior.

I have to disagree with this. Although sometimes kids do things just to get a reaction, at this age, they're learning what is and isn't allowed. When DS tries to grab my glasses or plays with the lamp cord, if I ignore it, he'll learn that those things are okay.

Now, when DD was a toddler and would yell, "I hate you" or other things, I knew she was trying to get a reaction. Those things I would ignore.

  • I pretend to cry and hope he stops. He usually think it is funny.
