Worried...

I am 23 weeks pregnant today and had my monthly check up. I gained 11 pounds in a month!!!!!! I can't believe it. In the beginning I lost weight due to nausea due to morning sickness. Overall I have gained 17 pounds. My doctor was surprised and I have to go for my gestational diabetes test next week. She wants me to go early just because of the 11 pounds I gained in a short amount of time. I am 35 and my sister had gestational diabetes with both her pregnancies-so it is in the family. I was in good shape before the pregnancy-healthy weight and running 5k and 10K's. But since my morning sickness has disappeared my appetite has increased and I admit I have been eating crazy-chips, doughnuts, Mcdonalds french fries....I am so scared I will end up with diabetes-its so miserable. I remember my sister being on such a strict diet. But could it be that I just ate too much last month and I don't have diabetes....Has anyone experienced this? I am only suppose to gain 30 pounds and I am already at 17! I am kind of freaking out and feel guilty that my unhealthy eating last month might of caused my diabetes.I am definitely going to eat better now. But it sucks because for the first 3 and 1/2 months I didnt want to eat anything.

Re: Worried...

  • I didn't put on 11lbs in 4 weeks, but I did put 7 lbs on in 4 weeks. At my 24 week appointment I had already gained 20lbs. My doc wasn't concerned at all, she said I look great and it really is all bump (I havent put weight on anywhere else really). She was happy with my bump size and weight gain - didn't mention any concern for GD, so I stopped worrying. I figured if she wasn't concerned then no need to be. I go for my sugar test at my next appt. Try not to worry too much (easier said than done). Make a change to your diet now and hopefully that will help. Best of luck!

  • 17lbs at 23 weeks seems about right to me but I'm no doctor. You can't cause GD, so don't feel guilty about that. If it's in your genes it will happen whether you were eating a health conscience diet or not.

I would say the 11lbs is just your body catching up from the initial weight loss you experienced, but again I am not a doctor.

    I have gained 25lbs and I'm 23wks soooooo yeah. I gained a total of about 35lbs with M.

  • Good luck with the GD test.  I'm a little concerned for the results of my glucose test in 2 weeks because my dad is diabetic.  I was skinny pre-preg, and at 24 weeks have gained 10 lbs so far, but who knows what's going on inside my body!  I would highly reccommend that you watch your diet though.  I know you already know this, but too much junk food isn't good for baby! Try to curb your cravings by having fruit to satisfy your sugar cravings, and treat yourself to sweet potato fries once a while for your french fry craving. Its easier said than done... I know this because with this pregnancy, i feel the need to have a dessert after dinner every night and I never used to be like this!  Good luck with everything!

  • With my first I ate EVERYTHING. Basically, if it wasn't nailed down I ate it. I gained A LOT of weight - WAY more than recommended. I especially craved (and ATE) French fries and chicken nuggets from McDonalds (SUPER HOT and SUPER FRESH) Multiple times a week! I loved sweets and all kinds of funky-junk. Guess what - no GD. It was okay. Don't stress about it. You ate what sounded good and you ate a lot of it. Its gonna be alright! Take it one day at a time. Take your glucose test, breathe and take it one step at a time.
I have friends that had GD with one pregnancy and not others. Or friends that had GD but didn't need to follow too strict of a diet, just lots of finger pricking and blood testing. It will be okay.

  • I definitely need to make healthier choices...and start walking. I went from pretty active to doing no exercise. In the beginning it was due to morning sickness. Now Its because I live in Maine and it is so cold and snowy. But I need to make myself get out and walk. Also I quit my job a couple of months ago(due to the physical part of it and just felt miserable) so I am home a lot more-which makes eating bad easier. But no more excuses...I have to get back on track and hopefully this was just a one time thing of eating too much...going to the lab next Friday so I will have to wait and see I guess. Thanks for the replies...feel better but it's definitely something I can't get out of hand.
