BF'ing and teeth

For those of you who BF and your DC has teeth...how do you deal with the biting?  DS got his first tooth about 2 weeks ago.  He doesn't bite all the time but often enough.  It almost makes me want to quit BF'ing!! It hurts so bad!! I hate pumping though but want to keep giving him breast milk.  Any tips? TIA!!

  • i'm interested to hear the answer to this to. my son doesn't have teeth yet, but sometimes he clenches down on my nipple, which HURTS! i say "no, that hurts" and take him off. i don't know how effective it is though.

  • I do the same...take him off and tell him "don't bite momma! that hurts!" He just looks at me and smiles though lol
  • I would just end the feeding then and there.  Wait 15 minutes or so before giving back the boob.

It doesn't take too long for them to learn that biting = no boobie. Or at least it didn't for my DD.

  • My DD had teeth for 9 of the 13mths I fed her.  When she would bite, I would pull away, have her face outward for only 30 seconds or so, then would allow her to latch back on.  Maybe it was luck, but she stopped fairly quickly.  I still got the occasional bite, but it was managable.

Now... a baby with teeth who sneezes while BFing.... yowza.

  • Just remember, when your DC bites, 'feed the bite'.  I learned this while training to become an autistic habilitator.  If a child bites you, instead of pulling them away from you, push them toward their bite.  It is not instinctual to do this, but it works.  I wish I would have known this before an autistic kid bit me b/c he bit so hard, he bit a chunk out of my shoulder.
