C-sections

Hello and questions

So I will be having a c-section due to hypertension and diabetes all the docs have mentioned that i will not be let go past 38 weeks at the most. How far in advance is the surgery normally scheduled for?

Did you have family at the hospital?

Re: Hello and questions

  • They scheduled mine a month in advance and 1 person is allowed in the room during it.  My hospital discourages having people wait around and won't let them up to the floor until the baby is born and you have given the ok.  They say that people should wait at home for a call.  Afterwards, I believe that they allow regular visiting, but DH and I aren't letting anyone visit the day of.  We want time for me to recuperate a little and time for us to bond with our LO.

  • If a woman has a known medical reason for a c-section, the c-section can be scheduled at any time.  My c-section was encouraged by my OB due to the size of the baby, and she wouldn't induce because the abdomen was measuring bigger than the head.

I had GD and DS measured big from 10 weeks on, so I had a couple of extra growth ultrasounds. At 33w6d, DS's estimated weight via ultrasound was 6 lb. 14 oz.  At 38w4d it was 9 lb. 15 oz.  I met with my OB after that ultrasound.  She told me that I could wait for labor (my body didn't show any signs) to start or I could schedule the c-section.  I had to be at least 39 weeks.  Based on my OB's schedule, I could have picked 39w2d (Monday), 39w6d (Friday), or a couple of days the following week.  My mom and step-dad were flying in on the day I was 39 weeks, so I decided to pick the earlier date.  DS was 10 lb 6 oz and 22" when he was born.

The hospital I delivered at only allows one family member in the OR, so DH was brought in right before DS was born.  (The nurse probably would have gotten him sooner if I wouldn't have started vomiting from the spinal block.)  DH stayed with DS the whole time after DS was born.  After DS was checked, footprinted, and cleaned up, DH took him to the recovery room while my OB finished stitching me up.

I was the first scheduled c-section of the day.  We had to be at the hospital at 6:30 a.m.  None of my family lives close by, so the early time discouraged everyone from hanging out at the hospital.  My mom and step-dad arrived about an hour after I got to recovery.  The nurse didn't have a problem with them hanging out with us there.  My brother and his family arrived a.s we were getting ready to move to our room, so they just met us there.  Family and friends were in and out the rest of the day.

  • Mine was scheduled at 20w with Lucas because the date was special to me. Both of our parents were in triage hanging out before the surgery and then in the waiting room until Chris came out to tell them.

  • My c/s was scheduled for 37w at my 27w appointment. I made it to 36w1d. My husband was allowed in the OR, as per hospital policy. He left with the babies once they were moved to the PACU.

  • At our hospital they don't let family back into the recovery room. Family was allowed into the LD room with DD1. But not recovery room after csections. We told family to wait a few hours before coming.

  • Mine was scheduled a week in advance for 10 days before my due date. My H was in the OR the whole time and then he stayed with the baby while they cleaned her up, did the apgar tests and gave her a bath. While that was going on, I was getting stitched up. My recovery was done in my own room and it was pretty soon after they took me back that my H brought the baby in. Visitors were allowed right away even though I wished they hadn't been. I was very sick all day from the pain meds, like constantly throwing up. People were in and out all day and I couldn't focus on anything. It was an awful day. Except for the fact that LO was born! But I didn't even get to hold her much cause I was so sick.
