Natural Birth

stopping by with a question

My first two I was induced with pitocin due to labor not starting after my water broke (both within 2 days of the 36 week point -- one before and one after)

I'd like to try to avoid pitocin this time around should my water break early again. Are there ways to get labor started at home that are safe after PROM?

Thanks.

Re: stopping by with a question

  • Maybe look into how long you can safely wait to go into labor with ruptured membranes, if you're gbs negative, I think you can wait up to 24 hours before doing anything?

About nine out of 10 women, who are at least 37 weeks pregnant, give birth naturally within 24-48 hours of their waters breaking. If you're between 34 and 37 weeks pregnant you may also have a choice of induction or to wait and see.

If you tested positive for group B streptococcus during pregnancy, the situation is slightly different. There is a risk of GBS-related infection if there is a long gap between your waters breaking and labour starting. So in this case you would probably be induced as soon as possible.

  • I waited 30 hours aftet PROM, went in for augmentation as the contractions I did get were maybe every couple hours between. I chose cytotec because my doc was willing to do a quarter dose instead of full dose and I woukd still be allowed to stay up and walk. Lo and behold, my water broke, again, during pushing. I then found out there can be a tear that reseals. If you avoid vaginal exams after an assumed PROM and watch for fever epidurals can give you a fever, bear inind I have heard of providers who will let women wait days until labor starts on it's own. Fever is a bad sign.

Early PROM is often attributed to an.infection in which case it is better to be induced. Early means before term. If the PROM is at term and there is no fever you are likely ok to wait. One risk factor for PROM is a baby in a poor position, even if head down. Read up on Spinning Babies and the book Sit Up and Take Notice. My daughter was head down but on the right and slightly posterior, so she had a lot of maneuvering to do early on to get into a position for labor to be effective.
  • There are other methods besides going straight to drugs to try to get contractions started. Nipple stimulation is a good one to try either done manually or with a breast pump. Also, taking long walks, walking stairs, and deep lunges can also help kick start things. The stairs and deep lunges can help to get a malpositioned baby into a optimal position to help a labor progress.
  • Thank you.
