4mo waking each night after 1 hour. Help?

So for the past 3ish weeks, DD has been waking up 45-60 mins after falling asleep at night. This happens every single night without fail. I can't figure out why this happens (other than it is at the end of her first sleep cycle), and what to do about it. I don't know where I'm going wrong...and I'm torn about how to handle this (there are so many sleep techniques out there!!). I need some outside input....

Here are the details: we have a bedtime routine that we follow each night. She goes to bed with all of her needs met, she is put into her crib awake and easily/quietly falls asleep on her own (usually with her thumb). An hour later she wakes up crying, which turns to screaming. Even if I go in and try to help her, it's like she has caused herself to be wide awake and it takes a while to get her calm enough to go back to sleep, then we usually start all over an hour later when it happens again. Once we get past this random wake-up issue, she sleeps for 10-12 hours without waking. During the day she is taking naps every 1.5 hours (they last anywhere from 45 min - 2 hrs) and she goes to bed between 6:30-7:30 depending on her nap schedule.

When I go in and help her, she cries when I leave. If I leave her alone, she cries. I don't know what to do!! There are tons of sleep training techniques, and the only one I'm not really open to is CIO. I want to help her but it's just so frustrating to not be able to understand what's going on. I don't get it. Help?

  • Google 4 month wakeful.

  • My son has done this a few times and I think it typically is because he wakes at the end of his first REM cycle and then probably hears us or something since his white noise is off then. I usually just run in and give him his pacifier and he will go back to sleep. So, I don't have tons of advice but I would just suggest you be really quiet around that time or extend some white noise to play through that time. I'm sure it is just a phase. On the positive side - at least she sleeps through the night after that first wake up!
