Ds eats every 3 hours...usually 4.5 ounces. At his last doc appt. My pedi said he should really be able to go 4 hours at his weight but to offer a little more...closer to 5ish ounces. I try sometimes but I feel like 4 hours is long! How often and how much does your LO eat?
Re: Time between feedings 3 or 4 hrs?
My LO still eats every three hours unless she is given some cereal with her bottle. She then eats again after four. Our pediatrician told me every three hours is normal until LO starts eating solid foods. As far as formula, she is currently on six ounces and will be bumped up to seven when she is five months old.
Our pediatrician said to add the number of months LO is and the number 2. That's how I get my amount and it's worked well for us so far. She is rarely unsatisfied after finishing a bottle.
7oz at 5months? My DD was at 8oz at 3 months. She eats every 3-4 hours. If shes awake 3 hours, if theres naps involved 4+ hours.
Since LO was a little less than 8 weeks, she has been feeding every 4 hrs most of the time during the day. Now at 12 weeks, she can take up to 6oz of BM in a bottle depending on how she feels. I've never tried anything more than 6oz in a bottle.
My girls are the same age as your son. They are just shy of 12lbs now, for reference.
We moved up to 6oz bottles (from 4) about two weeks ago. Most times they take all of it, sometimes not. We (and the DC) don't feed on a schedule, but let them lead. Some days it's every 2 hours, others it's every 4. I tried putting them on a schedule before I went back to work at 12 weeks and it was misery for everyone.
My personal opinion is that how long they can go between feedings, just like when they should be able to STTN, is a general guideline and every baby is has their own timeline. As long as your baby is gaining at a healthy rate, whatever you're doing is working. Just because the pedi says he "should" doesn't mean he will.
DS is the same. If he hasn't slept, he gets an 8oz bottle every 3 hours. If he takes a good nap, he may go 5-6 hours between bottles.
