It's not MSPI

Cade apparently has a corn intolerance. It's not an allergy, but he reacts to corn like someone with lactose intolerance would react to lactose. The formula before made him gassy due to the corn maltodextrine in it (it's the 4th ingredient), then the gentlease made it way worse cuz the first ingredient is corn syrup solids, and the gripe water we were using had fructose and sucrose in it both derived from corn. We took away the gripe water he got a little better. Confirmed with the pedi today. So, we switched him to a formula with very little to no corn in it and he loved it! Only time will tell how the rest of him reacts.

The sad part is that we will have to be very careful with what he eats when we start solids. So much has corn in it or things derived from corn. Since it's an intolerance and not an allergy there's a good chance he'll outgrow it, but until then he has to have corn free stuff. Fun stuffs. So, that's it! I'm glad it's not MSPI.

  • Yay for finding out the culprit, but happy label reading. I don't envy that.

  • Glad to hear. Do you know if it is something he will outgrow eventually?

Doc said that he could outgrow it. Like any other intolerance at this age. So after a few months we will try out corn again. However, until then I have looked for every single puff, yogurt drop, and cereal I could find with no corn products in it.

  • Yay, answers!

As a friendly suggestion for when you start him on solids, why don't you skim around on the 100 Days of Real Food blog and see if you find any recipes you'd be interested in?  Since the whole point is to eat only things that occur in nature a lot recipes on the blog that contain corn could easily be corn-free just because it's as simple as not putting in the corn.  Just a thought!

TY for this.  I have attempted to eat fairly natural, but it's very difficult considering where I live, which is a small town in the middle of corn country.

lol, all I can picture is grocery stores with shelves full of nothing but corn products.  Corn is natural (except that, like, 80% of corn grown in the US has been genetically engineered), of course, but it's pretty much the favorite of food engineers for making all kinds of gross stuff out of.

  • I was going to post that milk cartons are made from corn, but went to snopes, and it had nothing. So I googled and found cornfreedom.com. I would check out the info on packaging made from corn. I know you said it's an intolerance, so maybe it's not a big deal, but I thought I would mention it anyway.

  • Hey there, I just happened to be surfing around the boards and found this post. I know we were just talking the other day about your son and a possible MSPI... I see you found your answer! That's wonderful! And athough a corn intolerance is still a bummer, it's a plus that its not MSPI.

Can I ask how you came to this conclusion? And what formula you're using now? The reason I ask is because my son has been on PurAmino for his MSPI for about 3 days now and he still seems VERY fussy, resists naps (but thank god he's sleeping pretty good at night!), is now constipated (for which we give him 1 oz of pear/prune juice twice a day), and just this morning I still found mucus in his stool (though no visible blood, so yay for a small victory there, I guess!).

To make a long story short, I am now beginning to question this whole diagnosis and am wondering if MSPI is even the problem here in the first place, considering the problems really began when he was on Enfamil Gentlease (corn syrup solids), then Nutramigen (again, corn syrup solids) and even now on PurAmino (still has corn syrup solids in it!). I could be way off here, and maybe we're just impatient and haven't given the PurAmino enough time to really work, but I still have this nagging feeling that something is up here. All this guesswork is making my husband and I nuts!

Well, there was no blood in our kids diapers and he tested negative for milk allergies. However, had a small reaction to corn. All the things we have fed him since switching to formula had corn in it as a mian ingredient. So we decided to see how he did on just regular formula where the carbohydrate was from milk and not corn. So he's on regular Enfamil Premium now. We're on day number 2 and he is still having mucus and junk in his diapers, but he isn't pooping as much. What tipped us off on this was when we dropped the gripe water his diarrhea got less. The main ingredients were derived from corn. Also, the whole issue got way out of hand with the Gentlease, which is almost 50% corn. Since you are MSPI have you tried the RTF Alimentum? It's the only Hypoallergenic formula that has no corn in it.

From what I've seen is that a lot of kids with a corn allergy ( or intollerance) seem to also have MSPI. Which is difficult since all formulas that aren't the regular Similac Advanced or Enfamil Premium has it's carbohydrate derived from corn (as either Maltodextrine or Corn Syrup Solids). Alimentum RTF I think uses regular sugar as it's carb. Since he didn't have blood in his stool or reacted to milk as an allergy we are going to try him on regular Enfamil and hope it works (since it's so much cheaper than alternatives). If in 3 weeks he still has mucousy diarrhea then we will find a different alternative. So far he really likes this stuff. Slept 6 hours straight last night, isn't pooping as often, isn't gassy, and seems happy. So for you maybe give the Allimentum a try??

  • As far as your son testing positive for a reaction to corn, but negative for MSPI...how did this come about? Did you bring him to an allergist to have testing done? Thanks for the info on the Alimentum RTF...I'll ask the pedi about this and look into it. Maybe this will be an option.

I am definitely interested in finding out more about this corn/corn syrup intolerance stuff though. We are going on day 4 of PurAmino now, and our pedi said we should see a remarkable difference within 72 hours - and I have to be honest here...in the last 72 hours, my son has seemingly gotten worse! He now fusses and cries during/after/between every feeding, fights naps (but will sleep good at night, thank god!), and struggles to have a BM. This is just crazy now. It also seems to be a weird coincidence that the last 3 formulas he's been on (and had an issue with!) all have the main ingredient of corn syrup solids in them. I'll be calling the pedi again tomorrow to get in there and will probably be setting up an appointment with a pedi GI specialist ASAP, if not an allergist too at this point. I'm just lost when it comes to finding an answer to this and I refuse to think that my son is just "colicky", because I know that's not the answer. He's uncomfortable - and it breaks my heart to see him like this.

HI there... I saw your post and think we may be in the same boat with our LO. Same behavior and Puramino isn't helping. Can you please share how you were finally able to diagnose the intoleranice and what formula la you wound up using? Thanks so much.
    Mamma to Mark :)
  • Wow...this is a crazy old thread you drug up, but I'm happy to try and help. Sorry your LO is struggling. It ended up taking a good 7-10 days, but the PurAmino did the trick for him, he did beautifully from then on. The pedi was able to diagnose the MPI based on initial symptoms and blood in the stool.

So my advice is this...give the PurAmino a good 2 weeks. With MPI, it sometimes takes a bit of time for the new formula to get thru the digestive tract and let the gut heal. If you dont see a difference after 2 weeks, see yourpedi or GI doc. Hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Thanks so much! Yes, you can imagine how crazy I'be been getting when I didn't see the Puramino work. He's only been on it for a few days so I'm going to wait and see. It's hard to be patient. I'm so happy you were able to figure it out for your LO. Thanks again for your advice :)

I hate how almost everything has corn syrup in it. Not everything has to be sweet, including formula! I am glad you found some answers, and hope your LO continues to do well on current formula. I switched my daughter to organic formula from Germany, and I suspect the reason she's been doing so well on it is bc it doesn't have corn fructose syrup on it. She was fine with most formula, but always spit up, especially worse with formula that had corn syrup as first ingredient. Spit ups were sometimes so bad that I had old sweatshirts designated to wear when feeding her!
  • Me too @Sterling13‌ then I thought maybe I was confusing bumpies
