Possible Blighted Ovum... Anyone else?

I don't post a lot, but I'm seeking some female convo and advice...

I had my first appointment on Thursday, the 14th - was told that all my labs looked great, and that everything seemed great.  Then they did the ultrasound - there was a gestational sac, but there was nothing in it.  I'm supposed to be 10 weeks.

I went in for quantitative blood work that afternoon and again today.  I was just told by the nurse that my levels were super high, but didn't double or decline - they just sort of stayed the same.  So now I'm waiting to hear from the doctor and see what he thinks.  (Hopefully I'll hear from him this evening)  But getting labs done was supposed to give us a "clear picture" of what was happening.

Has this happened to anyone else?  I was told that depending on my levels, I am either experiencing a blighted ovum or my dates are all off and it's too early to see anything.  (How can they be??  I watch my cycle like a HAWK and know exactly when my LMP was - 12/06/12)

I'm expecting terrible news and being in limbo is the worst!

  • Yeah, knowing your LMP isn't "watching your cycle like a hawk."  It is very very possible that you O'd (much) later and therefore aren't as far as you thought.

At this point there isn't much you can od except wait....and hopefully they don't make you wait long.  Good luck

  • I just assumed that I ovulated "normally" as my cycles are right around 33 days and my test was positive on Jan. 10th. Maybe I should be posting this on another board for more understanding and support?? Thanks anyways.

  • OP, you are correct that being in limbo is terrible.  Based on the information you gave in your post, the possibility existed that maybe you ovulated later and were not as far as long as you thought.  That is why the PP was saying knowing your LMP date is not enough.

FX that your doctor contacts you soon and lets you know what is going on.

Well, the u/s is telling a vastly different story, so that kinda trumps the whoe timing thing.

And I'll just give a big ol' Confused to your last part.  Sorry, next time type what you'd like to hear and I'll just C&P it for ya!

  • OP, I'm sorry you're going through this. But what PPs are offering is very true and theyre telling you the best case scenario. If that's not support, I'm not sure what is. I hope your dates were off and not the alternative. GL!

  • Your dates would have to be off by over 4 weeks. It might be possible that you're off by that much, but that seems like alot. I had a blighted ovum discovered at around 12 weeks my last pregnancy and they told me my dates might be off as well. I wasn't charting, but I knew it wasn't possible bc I had a +HPT the day of my missed period. It's very possible that you have a blighted ovum. Because the placenta is still there giving off hormones your body isn't recognizing that something is wrong. My blood work showed levels that should have been around the 5 week mark.

I'm so sorry you're in this limbo, I've been there and it sucks. If it is a blighted ovum, it's just a freak thing that happens and there's nothing you could have done. ((HUGS))

That's the problem with reading all this text... It totally can be misread and interpreted wrong. When I said "thanks anyways", I meant it. I don't post a lot anymore and was just wondering if I might get more support or advice from a different board. Any advice and support is welcome... I'm just stressed out.

The doctor did call and wants to see me for another u/s tomorrow plus a visit afterwards. So we'll see. Hoping for good news, but also accepting the bad news.

Thank you all again. And advice is definitely welcome! Is there another board I can post on? I don't want to weigh you all down with sadness when this should be a board for celebration. :

Thank you for sharing. I've had one previous miscarriage, so for this to be happening again is just a lot to handle. My first pregnancy went off without a hitch, the entire thing, even ld. Now this is making for two roller coasters. Ugh. Sorry that you've been through the same thing. :

  • With a positive pregnancy test on January 10th, I have to say, things don't look good. I'm very sorry. I'd definitely request a second ultrasound, but with a positive test over a month ago, you should be able to see more than the sac. I'm so sorry for your loss. I too had a healthy pregnancy and then two miscarriages in a row. It's heartbreaking and a lot to handle. I truly hope this turns out ok for you, but I think you should prepare yourself. Again, I'm very sorry.

  • What type of u/s did your doctor do? If they did an abdominal it is possible that you O'd late and they couldn't see anything or that your bladder was not full enough.

If they did a transvaginal, it is very unlikely that they wouldn't see anything even if you were a few weeks off. I had my first u/s due to bleeding at 6w3d and they were able to see baby and find a hb.

I am sorry you are going through this and I hope everything turns out great for you. I am sending many T&Ps your way!
