Had to let great nanny go

Hi everyone... I'm not able to post much, but hope some of you have some advice for me.

We found out late last week that my husbands job is being relocated and we'll be moving in about 6 weeks. Totally out of the blue. This morning, we told our nanny, who has only been with us a couple weeks. She is a wonderful person - I feel like we hit the jackpot with her. I am so heartbroken that we have to leave her.

She was very, very sad when we told her. Obviously, we are going to do everything we can to help her find a new position and want her to keep working for us up until we move. We'll also give her at least 2 weeks severance pay. It was a difficult conversation and I hate that I am responsible for someone's bad day. However, we have to move - and we could not have predicted this.

Anyway, any suggestions on how we can make this better for her? I want to do the right thing, and feel so badly about these circumstances.

 Thank you in advance!

  • First off, I am sorry that you are losing such a great nanny, but if this is an unforseen circumstance, there isn't a whole lot more you can do. I think you are doing everything you can right now, and in a great way. Maybe get her a parting gift if you really feel you need to do more? But IMO it seems like unless you take her with you, again there isn't much more to do.

  • I keep in touch with a great family I once nannied for via email. We also exchange Christmas cards and It's so nice seeing how much the kids have grown over the years.

Like PPs said it was an unexpected circumstance, nothing personal. A parting gift and a heart felt thank you would be more than enough!

  • Aw, I am sorry for your stress! I think you are doing all the right things.. two weeks pay and being a good reference. This was unforseen, and even just telling her how much you appreciate her means a lot. If she is as great as you think she is... I am sure she will understand.
