Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Great eater to pickey eater (more of a vent)

my amazing eater has turned into a super picky eater.

At DS's 9 mo. apt the ped recommended we start giving him more table food & the we dictate what he eats and he dictates how much.  Seems reasonable, and we generally follow that throughout the day, but dinner has become a battle.  He went from eating everything we ate with gusto to now only eating waffles, pancakes, goldfish, kraft singles, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit & peas (no meat of any sort w/ the exception of occasional lunch meat, no cottage cheese, string cheese, avacados, beans, no noodles, etc).  I keep giving him everything, in hopes it's a phase and he'll go back to liking stuff.  I used to be able to disguise something he didn't like if I mixed it w/ something he did, but now he just sucks off the part he likes & spits out the part he doesn't.

I worry he doesn't get enough protein, aside from the greek yogurt, and that he doesn't get anything of high nutritional value. Daycare feeds him goldfish, lunch meat, kraft singles, & fruit (yay for installing healthy eating habits!).

I talked to the nurse at the pedi off last week, and all of her suggestions are things we do, to no avail.  I guess I'll just keep feeding him yogurt for dinner & continue offering things until his 12 mo. apt in a few weeks.

On a side note, DH travels most of the week & tends to call during dinnertime when I'm in the midst of frustrations about getting DS to eat, he doesn't always get it!  I had a slight laugh last night when he was feeding DS, and all of it ended up on the floor w/ the exception of his peas & when he tried to give him cottage cheese, DS spit it out onto DH.  At least he's not a picky mess with just me!

At this point most of his nutrition should still be coming from breastmilk or formula...including protein...so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

But I'd stop offering the unhealthy foods, and provide DC something healthier than goldfish and lunch meat for him to eat (I would be livid if anyone gave my LO lunch meat. Or goldfish).  And seriously why do people think pancakes and waffles (assuming made with refined white flour, not healthier versions) are a good food to feed babies???  Refined carbs, flour and sugar, are the root of the obesity epidemic in this country.

If he'll eat oatmeal and yogurt and peas, keep offering those as well as other vegetables and fruits and (fresh, not processed) meats.

i would have to agree. i would stick to the healthier snacks/food, and if they don't want it then offer BM/FF which ever one you are doing. our DD is just nuts for food, and would probably eat regular food all day long, but my BM is much healthier for her right now, so i limit her to two pouches of fruit/oatmeal a day, and some veggies when we eat lunch or dinner, since i make it for me and her dad, she will watch us eat and really want her own. most of it ends up on the floor, and only about 1/3-1/2 will actually end up in her belly. she loves loves loves her peas, and mixed veggies.

whats that saying? 'food before one, just for fun.' something like that. it isn't completely necessary, nutrition wise, for LO to have foods right now.

  • We've been having a similar problem. He used to eat any and everything that we put on his plate (we've been doing BLW since 6 months). Over the past few weeks, he's thrown a temper tantrum as soon as the food hits his plate. He starts finger painting with the food and throws it off the sides while yelling. Sometimes we have success with only giving him a couple of pieces at a time, but honestly, the main thing that works now is letting him have a drink first. He usually gets a sippy with WCM at dinner, and once he gets to sip on that for a little, then he'll take the food. At snacks/lunch, it's a sippy with water.

  • Exact same thing happening here! DD is almost 10 months.  We try to give her what we have for dinner but she almost always spits it out or feeds it to the dog.  She will pretty much only eat puffs and fruit.  Sad

I swear our dog has gained 5lbs since DS decided to not eat what's on his tray & feed it to her and/or throw it on the floor for her.
