We of course both changed our names,
My mother named me Venus and my brother Mars. When I tell people that, they say "Oh I like 'Venus', why did you change it??"
Well, first of all, it makes a strong, sexualized impression, which is simply wrong to do to a child who is her own person. People used to ask me if I was a dancer, or they'd use it as a conversation piece. It definitely made less-than-intelligent people feel free to make flirtatious comments about it. I had to work extra hard to be taken seriously.
The last straw was when I got a professional job (I worked as a paramedic and my name was on my uniform and name-tags) and everyone still made comments about it, and I just got sick of my name not supporting who I am and undermining my sense of professionalism.
My brother had his own negative experience with it.
Also, there is plenty of evidence that so called "intellectually saturated names" make getting a job more difficult.
I just don't understand why a mother would impose her identity on a child in this way. It makes me gag when I think about a child named "Unique", or a hishe end brand, or "Divine" or any of that ridiculousness.
End of rant, lol.

Thanks for sharing... glad you've found a name that suits you much better.
Did your brother change his name as well? And have you ever asked your Mom, "What were you thinking???"
Thanks for sharing your story.
Ironically, I work with a woman whose name is Unique.
I'm sorry and I agree about the crappy name choice, parents need to really think about their children, not themselves, when they are bestowing names. I feel embarrassed for people when I see wacky names on their name tags, MIL worked with a woman named Amethyst and she despised it. she was a bank teller and everyone assumed she was a stripper and always made jokes about it, male customers :completely random people: asked her what club they could find her at after hours. Her sister was Sapphire and their brother... BROTHER!... was named Diamond. She ended up changing her name to Ruby, it was the best she could get to normal without feeling like she was insulting her mother who had passed a few years before she made the change. I also knew a little boy named Snake I sh!t you not, he went to school with my brother... That one really baffled me.
