I just read something in a baby magazine about the bacteria that's present in poop. I wonder if I have been going about this wrong, or if what i'm doing is ok. When DD's clothes get poop on them, I use a scrub brush and cold water to get the "surface poop" off, then I use a Shout stain stick to get the stain out, and wash in cold water with the rest of the laundry. I get the stain out every time, but what about bacteria? Do I need to worry about that? Does the bacteria spread to the other clothes in the washer or does the detergent take care of it?
Suddenly I have an urge to boil her onesies in hot water.
Re: cleaning poop from clothes?
I wash everything in warm water. I assumed the oxiclean & detergent were taking care of the bacteria.?
Now I have something new to worry about. LOL ?
Technically yes, what is on your laundry does just go into the water and there is the possibility that it could be redistributed on to your other clothes. TBut that is true with all stains on ALL your laundry, so the stuff on your DH's clothes, etc...are then transferred to other clothing as well if you wash it all together. The only thing that will totally get rid of it would be to wash your clothes in bleach, but I'll bet you don't want to do that! But you are already getting most of it off, it sounds like. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but you might switch to washing your DD's clothes in the hot cycle. That might kill the bacteria better.
I wouldn't get too concerned, baby magazines tend to be a bit alarmist. I can't say that either of my children have gotten sick from what was on their laundry.
That didn't even occur to me. I treat DD's poop stains the same way you do and haven't encountered any problems.
