Hi all,
So been having weekly sonos and appnts since 33wks because baby seems to be on the small side weight wise but all other factors on the BPP is normal. My fluid levels average, placenta looks good, uterus fine etc. I was very tiny before pregnancy and a small baby myself so it could just be i make small babies the doctor says. Dr said she will wait for me to labor naturally at whatever wk. So I'm starting 39wks today and 50% effaced but not dilated, baby's wt is now 5.9. the doctor was out sick, but she told the NP and on-call dr to just go ahead a schedule to get me admitted to the hospital tomorrow nite to get a cervical ripening agent and then induce me the next day Weds. I was so shocked b/c there was no indication since everytime my results come out average that I need to do this. I felt so pressured by the oncall dr and NP to just go ahead and get admitted w/o even talking to my regular dr.I was so irritated with the lack of concern for what I wanted to do or that I wanted to wait 1 day to speak with the dr on Weds when she gets back and then proceed with that plan. They didn't even give me an option of trying natural methods to see if i can dilate on my own. Is this normal- anyone else had a smaller baby where this is the course of action?
Re: Small baby wt - induction question
It is your choice. You do NOT need to be induced if there is no medical reasoning behind it and since it doesn't seem that way I find it highly irresponsible of your OB. They know your LO is small yet they still want to induce before your due date? That is ridiculous and I would not let them railroad you. I am in the camp that 40 weeks is not a timer though and a mother sometimes needs to go up to 41+ and that inductions are used far too often. I am an induction mom myself who ended up in a cesarean. I am VBACing and if my OB pulls the "we are going to section you" card for no reason then I don't even have to show up for the cesarean if I don't want to. You are in charge of your health, not your doctor.
One of my good friends was in the exact same position. Smaller baby, no medical problems and her OB induced her for no reason. Her LO is 4 now and she constantly says that if she knew then what she knows now she would have spoken up for herself.
I was induced for DD's size with my first. I was totally given the option, but it was strongly recommended by my doctor, so I did it. If I would have said no, though, it wouldn't have been a big deal.
I was induced on my due date because "I was measuring very small." The last two weeks of my pregnancy I went to my doctors office 4 times to have a test done (I don't remember the name) to make sure my son was doing ok because he was worried about my size. My Dr told me I could wait but said he would feel better if the baby didn't stay in past my due date. I agreed to be induced because I knew 100% that my doctor would be the one delivering and I was already 4cm dialated. I don't think I would feel comfortable in your situation without more information. I would insist that my doctor see me to discuss everything in detail before making a final decision.
I have been diagnosed with IUGR and am in the same position as you are. Everything looks really good, just a small baby. My son was also a small baby (5lbs 13oz), I was never diagnosed with anything and went into labor naturally at 40 weeks exactly. With this pregnancy my doctor has already indicated that there is a chance that I might be induced early but we would have to see how things were going to know for sure. I was very clear with her that I did not want to be induced unless there were good medical reasons as to why it was nessecary (baby or my health).
When we get closer to delivery time, if my OB is recommending induction she and I will have a very long conversation about why and the risks and benefits. I think your OB owes you at least this. I would call them and tell them you want to meet with a doctor to go over everything before you get an induction scheduled. They can't tell you no, it is your choice. Then at least you will have the peace of mind knowing that it was the right choice.

Agreed, this is your decision and if they are not giving you a medical reason then you can say no.
