Talk to me about dreamfeeding

What does it look like when you do it? How long/ much does LO eat? Any other important info? I'm going to run an errand and will be back in a bit.

Re: Talk to me about dreamfeeding

  • Depends when CJ goes to bed I always dream feed a 4am, but if he falls asleep before 10 I will also feed at around 11. Basically I just pick him up and put him to breast. Usually he only eats from one side and doesn't eat as much as during a regular feeding. When he is done I burp him briefly and lay him back down. Usually I can get a dream feed in in under 30 min. Big trick is not to change him because then he'd be wide awake.

  • For the last little while Arianna hasn't been going to bed until 10, so no dream feed. But when we did, I would take her out of her bed, and just pop the bottle in her mouth. Sometimes she'd take it, others she wouldn't. She would eat anywhere from 1 ounce to 2.5

  • I rarely do this. But when I do it's usually just because he is sort of waking up after being down for awhile. So I just put him to the breast and he usually eats from one side pretty good and the second side for a good few minutes. I try to burp him but he almost never does. And when I put him down he is out like a light with a full tummy. I would never do this unless he is starting to wake up or fuss a bit. If he was just asleep and looking content I won't do it.

  • My DH usually does it, he gives her a bottle of BM around 11:30-12. He says he has to wake her up otherwise she won't eat. But she takes around 3 oz and goes right back to sleep. When I do it I can put her on the breast and she'll nurse without fully waking up, but she won't eat as much as if she was awake. We only change her if we hear her poop.
  • I usually only do it if she's rustling around already, so I try to feed her before she fully wakes up and wails.  She has a really hard time opening her mouth wide enough when she's sleepy, but we have lots of other bf/latch issues so ymmv.

  • It sounds like we're doing basically the same things. I don't burp her because she wakes up when I do. The flip side of that is that sometimes she spits up as soon as I lay her down. Blech.
