Babies: 6 - 9 Months

formula & water

I feel like this is going to be a dumb question and that I should know this but I'm going to ask it anyway.   I get the weekly updates from the bump and today the "tip" said that if you are bottle feedingto limit baby's daily intake to 16 to 24 oz of formula/bm.  If he still wants more to drink, offer water.  I guess from some stuff I've read it says baby's main source of nutrition is formula/bm until they turn atleast one and any solids are more so for learning/exploration.  I also was under the impression that babies weren't suppose to have much water.  I feel like this is somewhat conflicting information..what do you all think/do?

Thanks! :)

Re: formula & water

  • My son drinks about 32 oz of formula a day and 3 jars of baby food. My pediatrician says that he wont eat unless he's hungry so to feed him when he wants. She also said that I shouldnt give him more than 4oz of water or juice a day

  • Our pedi said a minimum of 24 oz of formula a day and some water. Your correct in the fact that formula or breast milk is the main nutrition. Till 1

  • You are right. Baby should be drinking formula not water. My dd had her 9 month well check this morning and doc told us to up her calorie intake meaning more formula. She only takes 4 oz at abtime so we have to sneak an extra bottle in. Too much water depletes and flushss the nutrienrs out of them. She also told us to feed baby cerial or food 34 times a day at 34 tbsps per serving. It all depends on how old your baby is though.

  • There are lots of opinions on this. I've heard several Mommies say that their doctor either said "no water" or told them to give "a few ounces of water." I personally don't give any water. I don't see a need for it and my doctor never mentioned it.
