Babies: 9 - 12 Months

body sleep bag? or.. whatever it's called.

Lux sleeps WONDERFULLY at night, she is amazing, and will sleep straight through 9-10 hours at night. but for napping, she must be in my arms, or else she will wake up , or only sleep for 20 minutes. when she is in my arms she can sleep for well over an hour, twice a day. it is normally the only way she will nap unless she falls asleep in the stroller while out for a walk, and then someone must rock or move the stroller when inside the house after we are done, or else she will wake.

it seems like she likes my warm embrace, or movement. but here's the thing. she slept very well in the swing until she learned to roll over. now if she can't move in her sleep she will wake very very cranky.

so i am kinda stuck here. we will NOT CIO don't even mention it, it will fall on deaf ears.

and honestly i don't mind her sleeping on me, not at all, she is only 9 months old right now, and i am a SAHM so it is ok for now. i am thinking about the future. i mean if i got a job, which i am trying to do, she would go into day care. i would love it if she could just learn to go to sleep on her own. or stay down once i rock her to sleep.

once she accidentally wakes from a nap, it is nearly impossible to put her back down unless you catch her real fast.

i am wondering if a sleep suit, or whatever it's called would work or not?

when we swaddled her, she was able to break free. every. single. time. once she was about 3 months old. we used the special swaddle blankets, and just swaddled with regular blankets. and within about 20 minutes of sleep her arms were out, and she would move and wake up.

any tips? i saw a picture of holding a baby with your arms sideways instead of a wrap hold for easier transition into the crib. but i really don't know what else to try. and was looking for any advice.

TIA

  • You've got to learn to master the successful transition to the crib.  I have said it before but I believe it's one of the most important skills a parent can have! I nurse my 13 month old to sleep every night and she falls asleep in my arms (or attached to my boob next to me on the bed).  I've gotten really good at transferring her to the crib and I'm at an about 95% success rate now a days!

So yes a "sleep sack" is a good idea because I think that keeping them warm while transferring to the crib is key.  I also wrap her in 2 blankets while in my arms so when I move her to the crib she's still at the same temperature and doesn't feel the cold mattress or sheets under her.  It's really important to not put her in the crib and them wrap her up, make sure she's wrapped up first.

Oh and definitely don't let her fall asleep on you, it's way harder to move her.  Make sure she's either next to you on the bed or in your arms sideways.

Also my baby is probably the lightest sleeper on earth so we put a noise machine on and close all the doors so she doesn't wake up.

    Good luck!

at night, she nurses to sleep, and will transition perfectly. and then will stay down, until she has a cold or something. she can sleep up to 10 hours a night, very nice. but these naps!! LOL! you would think she would be good at them too! we were thinking a sleep suit/sack would be helpful, just we need something she wouldn't break out of. her second nap around 1-2 pm she is in a blanket, but honestly, i never tried moving her during that nap because i was afraid she wouldn't get enough sleep. so today i will try and see if the blanket helps. i want her to be happy, but also more independent.

  • Oh ok that makes sense! You know what I think naps are way harder because it's not dark outside and I just feel like the sleep isn't that "deep" during nap times.  Also my nanny puts DD down beautifully because they have a really good routine.  She doesn't cry and goes down WHILE awake and doesn't take a bottle from her to sleep.

When I'm home on weekends it's very different because she knows I can nurse her so she expects it during naptimes.  I try to treat naptimes like bedtime but it is harder.  I have to have the room as dark as possible and there needs to be SILENCE in our house during naptime!

  • I have a friend who will use a heating pad to warm the sheet in the crib up. You take the heating pad out right before putting the baby in so it feels like body heat. I have no idea if this would work but it would be worth a try. You might try putting baby down in the crib awake and stayright next to her. She might be able to fall asleep holding your hand or something. My baby has a bunny she has to sleep with. She rubs it on her face until she falls asleep. Does she have a special blanket or stuffed animal?
