Broken leg for DS :(

Good morning ladies,

Mostly a lurker here, coming out of hiding to ask a question like I do every few months or so ...

Has anyone's LO broken a bone yet? My DS broke his tibia yesterday - full cast from hip to toe.  He doesn't seem to be in much pain, but is pretty miserable from being uncomfortable and unable to be as mobile as he wants (he is a very VERY active little boy!)

Any special tricks for making him more comfortable or for entertaining him in a way he can sit still? We can only read so many books in a row and he doesn't like TV.  It's heart breaking to know he wants to be running around.

Anyway, I'd love to hear if any of you have had experience with this yet.  Thanks!

(I think I'll post this on the Toddler Board too ...)

  • What happened was that DH was carrying him downstairs and lost his balance.  Both tumbled to the bottom.  DH has some bumps and bruises but managed to keep DS on top!  We are on day 2, and LO seems to be managing OK, he's justs wants to move so badly but can only army crawl and drag his leg behind him.  totally pathetic!

Oh man, that stinks!  I would try buying a few new (stationary) toys.  My son is starting to like shape sorters, chunky puzzles, things he can bang on (a tool bench that makes noise when he hammers) etc.  Perhaps the new-ness of the items will help a little bit.

    good ideas!

I believe Valzee's LO broke his leg, so I'm sure she can help. Hope he heals quickly!

Yep, Jack broke his tibia in December. He didn't have the full-leg cast though, it was only his lower leg. He was pretty immobile for a few days but then he just took off on it, and by the time we got it off he was fine.

We gave him lots of new toys that didn't require movement (books, puzzles, stacking blocks, etc.) so he could just sit on the floor. We also took him for double the number of stroller rides so he would still be out and about.

Is the full-leg cast the permanent one or just a temporary fix until you see the doctor?

Hope he doesn't have to be in the cast too long!
