Anxiety/Panic

Hi, I'm new to this and hoping to find some help. I'm 27 years old and pregnant with my first child. After years of being told I couldn't concieve I was shocked to find out on January 19th I am pregnant. I had never planned a child and lived without thinking of having one. My problem is not that. I'm very happy to be pregnant as is my fiance. So I'll explain as best as possible as to why I've said all that. Since I was 14 years old I've had crippling anxiety, panic disorder, depression and ocd. I began taking Paxil 12 years ago. I weened off when I found out I was pregnant only now its starting again. Slowly but I know the storm is coming. I'm at a loss for what to do. My obgyn hasn't ever treated my anxiety so he's not sure how bad it is. What do I do? Has anyone taken any meds while pregnant for this? Can anyone help me?

Re: Anxiety/Panic

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! I do not have experience with panic/anxiety, but I do know that there are a few meds out there that are considered safe during during pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risk,  which in your case is worth exploring since you have a history of anxiety already. Obviously both your physical and mental health is important, especially now since you have your unborn child to think about! Hang in there and be sure to communicate with your dr about this. Best of luck.

  • Zoloft is safe, as is Prozac and some other of the newish antidepressants - just not Paxil.  Talk to your doc about getting back on meds, and if your doc won't prescribe them, go to see a mental health professional who will.

  • I have a pretty bad anxiety disorder as well. I went off meds awhile back, and I'm recently pregnant as well. I've been trying to cope using other techniques I learned in therapy, it's not perfect, but helps. Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, breathing etc;
