s/o used carseats

So what do you do with your car seats when you are done with them and/or they are expired?  Cut the straps and throw them away?  We aren't finished with ours yet, but I was thinking about that the other day...

Re: s/o used carseats

  • I don't care what people say... I'm selling mine.

We bought ours brand new and I know it won't be expired when we're through, plus it cost us an arm and a leg because I was picky.

  • We plan to use ours until they expire unless we are in an accident.  I would cut the straps and toss them.

  • With DD's infant seat we loaned it to someone who knew us well enough to know we wouldn't lie about any accidents, then when we got it back we traded it in at Babies' R Us's trade-in.

For DS, we got a convertible, so it'll last probably until it's close to expiration. Then we'll likely trash it.

  • you can trade in expired carseats for discounts on new gear at BRU/TRU.

  • If I had a friend who needed it, I would give or sell it. I wouldn't sell to a stranger bc it would make me uncomfortable that they didn't know for sure. Other than that trade it in at BRUs.

I'm not completely against people reusing car seats from someone they know and trust, but I do think there are a lot of variables to consider. I would never do it because my child's safely is too important to me to risk with a seat that may be compromised. I'm thinking you wouldn't buy a used seat either because you said you were picky about your seat. Your post makes you sound like an jerk. You don't care what people say, you are going to sell your seat because it cost you an arm and a leg since you were picky about your seat... Like I said, I don't think people are terrible for reusing in some circumstances but jeeze, you make it hard to agree with you when you word you post like this.

So to answer OP's question, I would never sell my seat to a stranger, even if I knew my seat was ok. Something about it does not sit well with me, since I would never trust my kid's safety on the word of a stranger. I would do the BRU trade in program or cut the straps and recycle the plastic parts of the seat. Just my two cents.

  • If they aren't expired yet I'm going to donate them to the church who will pass them on to people in need. If they are expired, I'll either toss them or if I know someone who can use them for a trade in deal at BRU, I'll give it to them.

We gave our seats to an agency working with moms with very few resources. They were not expired.

i did the same thing. I was okay with it knowing that the seat was in excellent condition and not expired.

  • As long as they're unexpired and not crashed I'll sell them. While I know it's not recommended to buy a used seat people do. I have no problem selling mine as long as it's safe.

You realize you kinda sound like a jerk though, too. Right? Just because YOU would NEVER trust your precious baby in a used seat doesn't mean others feel the same way. Its not illegal or unethical to sell an unexpired carseat that has not been in an accident. You can choose not to buy it, but wanting to sell one doesn't make someone a jerk. I will be reusing G's infant seat and his current convertable for the new baby. He has a long torso, so even though his seat is supposed to go to 65 lbs the shoulder straps are almost at the highest setting and his head is an inch from the top. I will be doing more research for the next one!
Well I did say originally that I am not against the practice all together (a couple of times in fact), just that I the way she stated her reasoning made her sound like a jerk. At least in my opinion, which is just my opinion.

I disagree. I think she meant she has heard how people on this board react when talking about buying used seats, and she was saying she was planning to do it, no matter of other's opinions.

And she may have been the pickiest person buying an expensive seat, but as long as it's in good condition... she absolutely can sell it, obviously some people aren't at all picky.

Perhaps you are right. It is hard to detect tone thru text, so maybe I read her wrong. As I told PP and stated in my OP, I'm not completely against the practice(even if it's not for me.)

  • I traded in our expired seats at BRU. In the past, I have our old infant seat away to a friend. I think it only had about 9 months left before it expired, and I made sure she knew that. After we're done with DD3's seat, I'll probably try to sell it on Craigslist.

As long as it's unexpired (which it will be when I'm done with it) and it hasn't been in an accident, I'll sell mine, too - if I don't donate / give it away. If someone is going to buy a used car seat anyway, I'd rather them be able to buy it from somebody who is trustworthy and isn't going to lie about its history... like me. haha

This made me laugh.  If they're buying a used carseat at least I know they're getting a safe one!  I trust myself, don't you trust yourself?  Why do you feel uneasy selling your OWN carseat? LOL... weird.

And I cannot stand the word "jerk" ick.

And yes you read my tone wrong, you flamed me in a weird way I was not expecting...
