Dental work first Trimester

I went and had my teeth cleaned last month.

First time in 3 years without the braces on.  It was amazing but he did find 3 cavities.  I know, I know... sounds like a lot.  But I had braces for 3 years and my mouth wired shut for 7 weeks.  I consider myself lucky its not more.

Anyway, I'm scheduled to get 1 filled on Friday 2/22 and the other 2 on 2/28.  We're still in our first trimester and everything I read say the studies are undecided on if it is ok or not.

Did you have any work done while prego and or would you?

Re: Dental work first Trimester

  • I'd talk to your dentist and see what they suggest. At a minimum, I would delay it a few weeks so you are into the second tri.

Some cavities are not that bad and can be pushed back, if that is the case, I may wait. I'm guessing your dentist would be able to suggest what is best for your case.

I haven't googled about the pain meds used by dentists. I would definitely not let them knock you out, but novocaine may be ok.

  • I have heard local anesthetic is okay. I personally have not had dental work besides cleanings done during pregnancy. I would ask the dentist and maybe delay it or ask your OB to see their opinion.

  • I'd talk to your OB and dentist.

  • Ok, I'll give them both a call today.  First Ob & then dentist.

    Thanks ladies.

  • I needed a filling when pregnant with Augie.  They asked me to wait until after I had the baby.  I thought that was probably the right decision.  They said if it was an emergency or really causing a lot of problems they would do it but if it can wait, it's best to wait.
