treadmill made me sick

Hey all. I normally am super active pre pregnancy. Now I am exhausted like most of us and have been only doing prenatal workouts at home usually 30 to 45 minutes per day. All of these are pilates, bar method, and more strengthening.  I can't seem to find more cardio based prenatal workouts. I have been nervous to go to my regular gym but decided to try the treadmill today. I used to jog all the time. After less than ten minutes at 3.0 I felt really sick and winded and stopped. I dont get it. Has anyone else had something similar or does anyone have any thoughts? I hate to think I can't do even really light cardio during pregnancy.

Re: treadmill made me sick

  • I was very active pre-pg. I was in the middle of Les Mills Pump and Turbofire hybrid program. Once I got pg I became exhausted and nauseous all the time. It has grown more intense every week. Last weekend I decided to take my pups to the park. We walked like normal. After walking up a long hill I became very short of breath and thought I was going to vomit! We hot in the car and came home. I don't know what causes this other than maybe rising hormone levels? I'm just doing what my body says for now which is rest. Hopefully in second tri energy will return, and I hope to at least be able to walk everyday.

  • I was really active pre pg and so far (fingers crossed) I have only had to moderate at touch.  I still wake up at 4am and spend 45 minutes on the elliptical then do stretching and toning (I typically get sick later in the day).  I have definitely toned down the intensity and some days its more of a walk then anything. I would just say listen to your body and hopefully it will allow you to do more in the coming weeks.

  • If I walk fast I get nauseated.  Sit ups, squats, lunges - nauseated.  My husband asked if I wanted him to pick something up for lunch - dry heaves.  My list of things that don't make me puke is much shorter than those that do. I can't even imagine trying to do a cardio workout right now.  If you can great, if it makes you feels sick then don't worry about it.  Just try again when you are feeling better.

  • I was really active prepregnancy too. And I was like you a couple weeks ago. I just couldn't finish a workout without nearly passing out or puking. I just took that as my body telling me to stop for a little bit.

I'm just getting back into working out and I feel pretty good. I've been going back to pilates and next week I'll be rejoining my bootcamp class.

Just listen to you body. Its perfectly fine to do nothing for a couple weeks. When you're ready you'll know.

  • Do you get sick just walking around normally? I've been fine running, although slower than normal, and my 4.3 mph cool down walk has been fine, too.

  • I dont. I only did 3.0 so I wasnt walking fast. I guess I'll stick to my videos for now.
  • Naturally during pregnancy, your body's heart rate will increase about 15 bpm, and your blood pressure will drop off a bit to compensate and ensure that enough blood reaches parts of your body including the uterus. It's the cardiovascular system's natural response to pregnancy! Most research supports doing low to moderate exercise. Keep in mine that since your heart rate has increased 15 bpm, it will get to a higher rate much sooner than you used to.
  • I hate treadmills and don't run on them.  I have found when I run outside I don't get sick but I do get tired and winded so much more quickly than I used to. I used to run around 30 miles per week before pregnancy and I can only handle about 10-15 now.  I am hoping I get more energy in 2nd tri.

I did try to use the elliptical a couple of times during pregnancy as it is my go-to workout when I am injured and I got nauseous after about 25 minutes.  I wonder if it has something to do with stationary, upa nd down motion inside without fresh air?

  • I am very active in my gym and I noticed when I do HAVE to run on the treadmill, it's a lot harder. I almost feel lightheaded vs. running outside (which is much better for me!) Also, in my first 7-8 weeks, it was SO hard to get to the gym to workout, let alone do cardio. Like a lot of the other women who posted here, I would listen to your body and take it down a notch if you are feeling sick, dizzy, etc.

I am training for a half marathon and I have noticed now that I'm further along I can run better and workout without getting as winded and still have some energy. I think the first 10-12 minutes of cardio are the hardest until I get into a rhythm. Keep hydrated with a sports drink to keep the level of potassium, salt and carbs steady and drink more often than you normally would. I bought squeezable organic applesauce to eat while I'm doing longer runs to have a quick carb load.

Good luck and I hope it gets easier for you!

I have the same problem. Pre-pregnancy I was very active running and kick boxing several times a week. Now I can barely get up two flights of stairs without breathing heavy. Treadmill-forget it. I've found riding a bike has been ok. The bikes at my gym also have a fan on them so it keeps me cool as I bike (I puke when I get hot).
