Babies: 0 - 3 Months

FF babies

My DD is 11 weeks and I still struggle with when to feed her. Do you feed on a schedule? Or on demand? How do you know when your LO is hungry. I have yet to pick up on any hunger cues from her, so if 4 hours have passed I warm a bottle. Ped said to do this during the day to load her with calories then so she won't wake much during the night. It does help since she sleeps 108 waking only once.

Any insight? Thanks!

Re: FF babies

  • When my LO was your age we fed every 3 hrs, max.  Often, she would put her fingers in her mouth to let us know she was hungry.  If it got to the point where she was crying it was too late.  Eventually, your LO will find her fingers so it's not as reliable once that happens.  If you aren't able to tell when you LO is hungry I'd feed on a schedule....every 3-4 hrs.

  • I know little man is hungry because he is awake and crying. Plus he'll start rooting around and nomming on his hands. I got a baby that has like 30 minutes a day of happy alert awake time, the rest of it is him fussing, sleeping, and eating. So when he wakes up I know it's bottle time, change time, and feed. Usually he goes back to sleep. If he is still hungry he'll root around for me, so I'll make him another bottle.

  • My son is just over 6 weeks, and although I TRY to loosely follow an every 3 hours (during the day) schedule, he normally lets me know he's hungry by rooting around, sucking on his fingers, or fussing/crying. Lately he's been wanting to eat every 2-2 1/2 hours so sometimes it ends up more like feeding on demand. For the most part, I try to follow his lead. If he's hungry but it's only been 2 hours, I feed him. If it's been 3 hours since his last feeding, I feed him. During the night on the other hand...I let him sleep as long as he possible can!

  • The way we know he is hungary is when he starts sucking his lips, sucking on his hands and if he's crying means we missed the other signs.

  • We feed 4 oz every 3-4 hours, the ped wants us to I'm for 4 hours but it usually is about 3.5 hours if i follow her queues.  I also feed her right before bed, she sleeps 830-5am sometimes 630 am....we don't wake to feed.

    Yep.

We feed on demand.  It's typically every 2ish hours.  We did the same with DS and he put himself on a great schedule that evolved based on his changing needs.  I think with babies they know what they need as far as sleeping/eating more than we do because it's all about instincts for them, plus their needs change.  Just follow their cues and it will make it a whole lot easier on you in the long run!

Since you said you're not noticing cues I would read up on them (maybe see if there are any youtube videos that show clips of what to look for?) and also keep an eye on the clock.  It's likely that your LO will want to eat every 2-3 hours right now so when it's probably time for them to eat next based on the clock, take notice of what sort of things they're doing.  It might help you to see what to look for.  Babies will definitely let you know when they're hungry one way or another!
