Mirena + Endo?

It seems crazy to me to be thinking of bc options now, after being focused on TTC for so long (and especially since I likely won't be able to get pg again without fertility treatments...). But, crazier things have happened and it will be nice to be able to reduce some endo pain again. Which brings me to my question: has anyone with endo used the mirena as treatment? If so, what was your experience like?

My doctor said that there haven't been enough studies to say whether or not it is likely to work. Prior to TTC, I used yaz continuously for b/c and endo treatment but that obviously won't work with BFing. My other option is obviously to take the mini pill continuously and I'd likely be pain-free again. With the mirena it's much more convenient but, some women do stop their periods while others don't... Anyway, your thoughts are much appreciated!

Re: Mirena + Endo?

  • Well, I had the Mirena before I TTC'd (bad advice from my old OB) and I have stage II endo. I felt zero pain, never had a period and was like "endo schmendo!". That being said, if you are thinking of having any more I would stay away from it. My RE is convinced they are horrible for future fertility.

If this is it for you, it was great for my endo!

    Me: 37 DH: 40 TTC since 9/09
    #1 BFP 1/10/11; missed m/c discovered 7w5d
IF Dx: Endo, hetero MTHFR mutation, poor morphology
    #1 IUI: 1/18/12 = BFN
    #1 IVF/ICSI 4/2/12 = 2 x 7-cell and 1 x 5-cell transferred (3dt) = BFP!!
H was born at 41w2d on 12/29/12 - be still my heart!
    #2 IVF/ICSI 1/19/14 = 2 x 8 cells transferred (3dt) = BFP!! EDD 10/09/14
M&W born at 37 weeks on 9/18/14 - I am the momma of 3 boys!!!

Ok, thanks! I think we will want one more. At least, I'd hate to do anything that would further damage my fertility!

No experience with Mirena, but I don't think the mini-pill is effective enough to control endo, and it's not a reliable form of BC.  I used it while nursing but also used a backup form because it has a high rate of failure, and there is no room for error as far as when to take it (it has to be taken at the same exact same time every day and even then it's still not highly effective).

Okay, thanks. I knew it had to be taken at the same time everyday. I'll do some more research. It's not a long term solution, just while BFing like you said.

I've never heard that mirena hurts fertility. How would it do that? I got mirena after the birth if DS precisely because I wanted to have a form of BC that would also help control endo. I used paragard in the past. It had nothing to do with my fertility problem and as it was not hormonal certainly did not help.

In any case I will likely have to FET when I try for number 2 anyway.

    IVF #1 ET 1 d3 embryo 10/30/11 BFP
    3 Embryos frozen (1 d5, 2 d6)

    DS born 07/29/12

    FET #1 ET 1 d5 embryo 02/10/15 BFN

    FET #2 1 d6 embryo didn't survive thaw, transferred last d6. CP :(

I should probably comment too on my experience...So far, I've had no return of pain, and no AF either and I am probably having a cycle of some kind since I am not BFing.

I did spot for 2 plus months when I first got the mirena which was a bit unpleasant... But I guess that makes up for no AF. Also I have zero PMS symptoms that I would normally have.

Sorry, I should have elaborated! My RE has seen many cases in which an IUD has effected fertility, in his opinion. For me, it migrated, was embedded in a bad location and caused an infection which required surgical removal. It can puncture the uterine wall casuing complications that also lead to infertility. There is currently a class action suit in litigation which, if successful, would require the manufacturer, Bayer, to list infertility to the list of side effects. Of course this has been my experience only and I didn't get another IUD on the recommendation of my RE. Every BC has side effects and uncertain outcomes but you need to weigh those appropriately and make the right decision for you! The FDA issued Bayer several warning letters so far - you can goolge search them, I believe.

I will do IVF to conceive again when the time is right. I am on the mini-pill now and will take my chances with that. After my IUD experience I wouldn't do one again.
