Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC#2: Should I start buying diapers?

Hey! My husband and I started TTC near the end of January 2013. I know It will take a while for me to get pregnant because of my irregular cycles but I feel deep in my heart that I will get pregnant.

I would like to go ahead and start buying diapers, wipes and other things that the baby would need a lot of as well as supplies for breastfeeding. My husband feels like I should wait until I get pregnant.

I see it as one less thing to have to worry about and have to buy once I am pregnant so I can relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

Anyone have and advice or opinions on the subject? I could use a little help lol.

Re: TTC#2: Should I start buying diapers?

  • I would not buy a single diaper.

  • The only thing I have purchased is a cute onesie that I will use to tell DH that we got a BFP. I have no plans to buy wipes and diapers until I am well into my pregnancy and the risky phase is over.

  • I really don't think it's necessary to start shopping for that stuff now. Diapers and the like are things that you can get very easily once you are much further along in your pregnancy -- I didn't purchase those types of essentials until a couple of weeks before I was due. Bottom line, you don't know how long it will take to conceive, so it doesn't make sense to start taking up space in your home just yet!

  • I'm also TTc #2 and wouldn't start buying diapers. Sounds like your excited for #2 but just cool your jets.

I have other things I could spend that money on while TTC.

  • I am also superstitious about this sort of thing. I didn't buy the cute maternity clothes I saw because I didn't want to jinx anything. You have almost 10 months from your BFP to needing the diapers, so you have time.

    Good luck.

  • No, I would wait.

We registered for and received Huggies diapers, and Allison blows out of them so we had to make the switch to Pampers.  If you feel like you should be doing something, set up a baby-items savings account and transfer an amount each check/month there.

Buying diapers and wipes also is not stressful. You walk into store, put them in your cart, pay at checkout, and go home.

  • Once a week give a trusted friend/family member $20 to hold for you (or if your bank is reasonable about additional savings accounts, use that).

This way if you get pregnant right away, you have the money to go out and use it.  If you don't get pregnant, you are setting yourself up a savings for IF treatments, adoption funds or hell, even a vacation fund.

I've seen people advise to put the money on a GC to BRU or Target or somewhere, but I like the fluidity of having it to use however you'd like.

  • I honestly do not know why I didn't think to start putting money in a savings account. Lol, shows you how one track my mind has been! That is brilliant too because if need be I would have money to go towards fertility treatments if it were to come to that.
  • Definitely wait. Nothing would be more depressing than staring at a pile of baby paraphernalia on CD1 month after month.

Outfits are silly too because even though they are unisex, depending on when the baby is born, they may be completely out of season.

  • I know someone who did this after she had LO #1. She had a closet full of diapers (mostly huggies). She got PG, had an m/c, then got PG again. She had her baby and put huggies on her when they brought her home. She had a huge reaction all over her bottom. She tried to take the diapers back to a few different stores but since it was over the 90 day period she couldn't, even without a receipt. They scanned it and said it wasn't possible to get store credit for it.

You never know how your child will react (she even got the huggies sensitive diapers). She probably spent hundreds of diapers that she will never get back (she did donate them but I never asked if she got a receipt.

For LO #2, I plan on either doing as PPs stated  with a different bank account. You may not need diapers, but you could end up needing something else. Kids are expensive. If somehow you miraculously don't go through the money within a year or so, then use it to start/contribute to LO's college fund.

  • I agree with others that suggested a savings account.  I have been buying things because I was so excited for number two, but now I regret it.  I now have a few hundreds of dollars worth of new baby stuff sitting in storage.  If I don't end up having a second child I will just donate it all to a local women's shelter.
  • My DH would not be thrilled with me if I started bringing diapers home before we knew we were pregnant and in all honesty, I would hate to have them in the house as a reminder that we weren't yet pregnant. We TTA last month to get our finances and savings in order and now feel confident to start trying again. OP I think you're on the right track taking the advice of the ladies who suggested putting money away.

  • I guess I'm superstitious too...but really you have months to stock up on diapers once you get the BFP.  Spend that money on something else, or if you really want just stick it in your savings account for diaper buying once you are KU.

This. Or buy a gift card once a month to a place you can buy diapers.

I'm superstitious with that stuff.  I won't buy a single baby thing until I get a BFP.  But it's your money - to each their own.  However, assuming you and your DH share finances, it's his money, too, so he gets a say in how (and when) it's spend.

    I feel the same way.

  • I'm not superstitious. At all. I am TTC #1 and I am already creating a stockpile of diapers and wipes. I know I will get pregnant, may not be this cycle or the next, but it will happen. I like to be over prepared for things. Not a bad habit to have though, is it? Anyway, it's more of a *fun* thing for me to do right now. I'm a shopper. I love to find the absolute BEST price on the things I need/want and I like that I have plenty of time to do so. I like to be cheap! It's not that I have to be, I LIKE to be! I'm stocking up on cases of Pampers and Huggies for 14-17 cent per diaper. (Cheaper than most store brands even before they are taxed.) My game plan is to have a huge case of size 1, 2 cases of size 2, 3 cases of size 3 and so on. I'm not going to bother on newborns because big babies run in my family and the size 1 Pampers Swaddlers are 8-14 lbs. I'm not going insane with shopping, just buying something every payday for our future baby. You can also never have enough wipes. I have 3 of the bigest cases so far and got Huggies/Pampers for cheaper than the WalMart Parent's Choice brand. :D This is my new hobby. Also...I've been saving coupons for things that I will eventually need. I will be doing the Playtex Drop-Ins after breastfeeding and I have a bunch of $1 off any box of liners=cheap for what I am going to use anyway. I'm NOT buying anything gender specific though. If it happens that my future baby is allergic to anything I have bought, I can always sell it and get my money back. I can't rely on baby showers for things because my family/friends are kind of 'flighty', and honestly, I don't want one. So...I say if you're not superstitious, go for it. Don't go insane with the spending, but buying a little something for a great price every payday can't hurt anything.
  • There was a signal, actually, and I'm not a 'twit'. Grow up. C'mon, seriously??? Was that comment called for? To each his own. If you want to wait til you get the BFP then by all means, do it. If I want to have fun shopping and stockpiling, then I will do it. I have the money and time, so if I want to buy a case of Pampers and be excited about it, then I will.

I'm 10 cycles into TTC number 1. I'm trying hard hard to listen to the women on this board, not borrow trouble, and wait until the one year mark before I worry, but what if I don't ever get pregnant? What would I do with a stockpile of baby supplies? I have a baby tshirt from our alma mater that I'm planning to use when I tell DH, and it's painful enough to have that around every month. How would it amplify that feeling to have a ready supply of diapers? Your advice is terrible.

Yeah, that stood out to me too. I know I personally don't feel that sure of something I have no way of predicting. I'm a thrifty shopper and an avid couponer too, and as much as I'd like to snap up all of the deals that are out there, I just don't, because I am not pregnant right now.

  • I wouldn't because you don't know what size the baby will be when he/she comes out. My ds used a ton of newborn diapers but was only in size 1 for a month. My friend's baby was the same size as ds but out grew newborns in two weeks and has been in size 1 forever. Not to mention that if your baby has a reaction to that brand diaper or you happen to not like them, then you are stuck.

  • I've started buying diapers and wipes and we're not even TTC yet. But just when I get a really great deal on diapers (like Target's recently had some good sales/gift card deals and I had coupons so they were a really good price). If we don't end up having another child I will sell them, donate them, or give them to friends. I'm not going to buy 100s of boxes before I hit 2nd tri but I'll take advantage of good sales and deals.

Baby wipes won't go to waste in our house so I don't mind stocking up on those.

Now if only Amazon would have those awesome coupons again so we could score some $2 boxes of diapers...then I'd gladly buy 100 boxes. :P
