Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Food Question??

My daughter had an allergic reaction to both rice and oatmeal cereal. She loved eating them both, but broke out in hives. She is 5 months and I would like to keep her on food. I'm thinking it helped her sleep better because now that she off both at night she's been getting up three times a night compared to only once to nurse. I wasn't sure if I was ready to start other food such as orange veggies, but I think she's ready for it at least at night. The allergy test results should be back soon and then we will know for sure what she is allergic too. I'm going to ask her ped. at that time when she recommends, but thought I'd ask other mom what their suggestions are or if anyone else has experienced this.

  • Maybe avocado? I have read nothing but good things about it for babies first "solid"

Ditto this. I think avocado will be the first solid DS gets. Good luck!

Avocado is nice because it is healthy and has good fats.

There are no real rules about what should be started when, with the exception of high allergen foods, so go ahead with whatever you'd like.  Have you compared the ingredients in the two cereals you used to see if you can fairly easily identify the mostly likely culprit of the reaction?

we had to go to the er because she was breathing different and her hives. She had a follow up with her ped and she's thinking its a wheat allergy. She had t have blood work and should get the results in a few days. I did look t the ingredients and they are almost identical. The only thing is the form of a wheat flour.

  • DS has had bananas (they were first), sweet potatoes, pears, peas, carrots, avocado, green beans and oatmeal.  I'm introducing apples and broccoli this week.  The only reason I gave him oatmeal was to bulk his food up a little because he wasn't gaining weight like he should have been.
