SteelCity44

Just was wondering why LO needed the tubes.

My DD has had 3 ear infections in the last 3 months.  Doctor has treated them with a different antibiotic each time, we go back for a recheck of ear infection #3 on Monday so I can't say for sure about that one yet, but the other 2 cleared up fine with the antibiotic and it wasn't until she got sick with another cold that she got another ear infection.  When I mentioned tubes, he said that's more for kids who get recurring ear infections that basically don't respond to the anitbiotics.

I'm just wondering what was going on with your LO that tubes were recommended.

Thanks!

Re: SteelCity44

  • After our second ear infection in 2 months, they warned us of tubes, and told us we had 2 more shots this year before sending us to the ENT to get evaluated. He got 2 more ear infections in the next 2 months, triggering the referral. Each infection did clear up with antibiotics (a different kind each time for some reason), but he was seriously getting them every single month. They said 2 in the first year, and maybe 5 in the second year is within reason. 4 infections in 4 months was outrageous to them.

When we saw the ENT, they gave him a hearing test that noted slightly diminished hearing. They also were able to tell that he had residual fluid in his ears, meaning that his ears were struggling to properly drain. Because of those factors, it was recommended that he get tubes. We considered waiting it out, but I couldn't justify 2 or 3 more infections just to delay the inevitable. Yes, daycare makes him sick, but a lot of kids can deal with that because their ears drain properly. His obviously do not, which is why they continue to get infected.

If you're concerned about ear infections, you should ask your pedi for an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor) referral. It doesn't cost them anything, and should only cost you the co-pay. Then, they can see if there is something going on or if your LO just has had a lot of bad luck. Good luck!

  • Rob is currently fighting his 6th ear infection!  He had a double ear infection 3 weeks ago -- and now has another in his right ear!  Our pedi said that if he gets one more -- we will go to ENT and have tubes most likely.

Wow! We were initially told 7 infections within 2 years, but after the 4th in a row, they sent us to the ENT, which surprised me a little. I hope Rob feels better soon! These ear infections are NO fun!

  • Of course 2 days after she finished her antibiotics she gets another cold and starts tugging the ears again. We have a follow up tomorrow for her last infection and I have this bad feeling he is going to tell us she has another one. That will be number 4.. Ugh. My poor kid lives on antibiotics.

Oh man. I hope she feels better soon. That was kind of where we were with the infections, too. It seemed like as soon as he healed from one, he was sick with another. When our only solution was the shot antibiotic (taken over 3 days, 2 in each leg each day), I knew enough was enough!
