New idea, regarding travel!

Thank you ladies for all of your responses to my post yesterday about flying versus driving with 3 little ones... Based on your responses, I agree that flying is the lesser of two evils, hahaha. The only problem, we really can't afford to fly.

So here's the crazy idea we have come up with instead.... we are going to drive overnight! We will plan it so our normal nighttime routine happens, except instead of putting the kids to bed, we will pile them in the car and hit the road. DH and I will drive/sleep in shifts. If we have to stop for the night fine, but if we can push through we could do the drive in 14 hours, with only about 3 of those hours being kids awake.

Has anyone ever tried this before? If I can get the twins STTN by June when we travel, I think it will work. Like I said, I looked up plane tickets, and we really can't afford it, so I'm hopeful this will work, hahaha.

  • I am still only a mom of a singleton but this is what we always do. My IL's live about 7 hours away and we drive through the night and put Dd down when we get there for 5 my hours while we get some rest. I hope it works when the twins arrive because driving is so much more convenient for us.

  • We did exactly this  when the twins were 3 months. They did really good. Slept all night and when they were awake they were entertained by our portable DVD players.  Good luck!

  • We did this with DS when he was about 5 months old. We drove about 17 hours to his home state. We did stop around 12 or 13 hours into the drive for the day/night and then did the rest on the next morning. It was great for DS. It was horrible for us. DH did almost all the driving so he got no sleep. It took him a few days to catch up. I sat in the back seat with DS. I dozed off a little but was by no means well rested. That being said, if you have the time to catch up on sleep before the wedding, it isn't a bad option. There is no traffic and no stopping to feed LO. Once the twins are here we won't be able to afford flying for long so we plan to drive when we go out there. GL!

  • The book Twin Sense has some good tips for traveling with multiples. It suggests driving at night, and going through their bedtime routine before leaving. It also recommends using a blanket or something to make a visor to shield their eyes from the lights from toll booths, big trucks, etc. Good luck!

  • My Mom used to always do this with us (my sister and I are 2 years apart). She said its the only way to travel with kids. (my family wasn't a flying family either)

Plus you never know, the road might help them stay asleep

I will have to check out that book, thanks!

Yeah, if we do the overnight driving, we will end up getting there a day sooner than planned, so plenty of time to take turns napping and coming back around.

I'm just really gonna need the babies sleeping through the night first, I can't imagine pulling over to the side of the road at 3am to tandem nurse, yikes!
