Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Gassy baby. Still!!

My poor dd can't have anything but formula and cereal in her bottle for reflux.
We tried starting solids at a little over 5 months with spoon feeding cereal. She of course hated it so we moved on to veggies. Everything gave her gas so we tried fruit. Horrible gas pains again. So we took a week or so break and tried again. Same thing!! If I give her anything other than a bottle she has a hour or two of screaming and crying in pain until she passes the gas.
We had our 6 month checkup Friday and the pedi told us to empty a 15 mg capsule of Prevacid into her baby food once a day. I really don't know how I feel about trying that.
I havent tried yet because she is having a horrible reaction to her shots and I wanted to wait before trying anything until she's better.
Anyone else have a LO like this?
She's perfectly content with her formula and I'm not trying to force the food issue, but part of me feels like she will still be on just a bottle in college.

Re: Gassy baby. Still!!

  • I too have a very gassy baby!  He is now 8.5 months and things have gotten a lot better, but when we first started solids at 6 months he reacted very much like your dd.

We added probiotics (Flora Baby) to his evening cereal and also give him Little Tummies gas drops twice a day--once at lunch when he eats his fruits/vegetables and one in the evening when he has his cereal. These two things work really well. DS also has mild reflux, but my pediatrician has not mentioned changing up how he receives his prevacid.

We have gone very slowly with solids, because some cause more gassiness (e.g., green beans) than others (e.g., pears) and once we find a combination that gives him little to no gas issues (e.g., pears and squash), I keep him on it for at least a week.

At 6 months, my son was waking up every 1-2 hours overnight with gas pain, and during those times I would give him Tummy Calm, which also seemed to help.  Now, he still has some nights where he has gas trouble, but more often than not he only wakes 1-2 times per night to eat and goes immediately back to sleep.

When we were struggling with gas, the only advice my pediatrician gave was basically that some babies have more trouble with solids than others and that eventually the digestive system will get used to it.  Thankfully, that seems to be the case, but the process of going through it is not fun and involves a lot of trial and error!  Good luck!!

  • We use Colic calm gripe water which has seemed to help.
  • I will have to try a probiotic!! Thanks! Pears are a good one for us too!!

Gripe water and gas drops do nothing for her.

Do you feed your LO as much as he will eat or do you limit amounts?? My dd will eat and eat if I let her.

  • DS takes Prevacid (1/2 of a solutab every morning) and it helped with his reflux and gas immensely.

It's worth a shot, IMO. Are you giving her gas drops when she's in pain? They usually soothe DS right away and make him pass gas two minutes afterwards.

No. Gas drops do not help. Bicycle legs is the only thing that helps.

I have never limited the amount that DS eats. For lunch, he'll get 2.5 oz of a fruit and 2.5 oz of a vegetable; for dinner he'll get 4 tablespoons of rice cereal mixed with 3 oz of BM.  He has never acted hungry afterwards, so I have never had to make the decision of whether to keep shoveling it in. :)

Gas drops didn't work for us until we started giving it to him just before his meals.  I read somewhere that a jumperoo will help to break up gas bubbles, so after he eats lunch/dinner, I burp him, then put him in the jumperoo for about 10 minutes.   Thankfully, our daycare provider does this for him, too.  Again, I have no idea whether or not these things helped him or if he would have had the same outcome without them, just given that it took some time.

  • We went back to a slow flow nipple for night time bottle.  That helped immensely.  LO no longer wakes with gas.  We were giving oatmeal during last feeding.  Stopped that too.  Oatmeal was making him gassy too and waking him at night.

We are having a problem with food. Not formula. Also, we use mixed grain cereal and she has no gas from that!
