Success after IF

Pump question

Hi Ladies

I'm dropping from PAIF. I finally bought a pump today after stewing about which one to buy for months. I was literally paralyzed with indecision up until I paid for it. Some dad shopping for his wife asked me which one to get as I stood there looking at them and I nearly burst into tears. That is not the point of this post though. My question is, for those that have a med.ela pump, it appears 2 bottles came with it with lids but I couldn't find any nipples for the bottles in the bru store. Do you just get other bottles and nipples? Are the bottles that come with it just for pumping into? I got the pump.in.style one plus I picked up some storage bags. Anything else you think I need?

Thanks!!

Re: Pump question

  • I was given a bunch of nipples at the hospital that i was told were disposable but actually I can wash them or throw them away according to the package. Naturally I threw half away and now I can't find any more either!

  • If you google medela collars and nipples, you can get an extra parts kit.   I had a bunch of extra bottles from hospital, plus I know we lost a lid/nipple here and there along the way.  BRU does sell medela nipples, but if you have solid lids obviously you need the nipple collars, which for some damn reason are not sold alone (at least, they weren't a year ago).

  • You might want to use the bottles that come with the pump for pumping and storage and choose another type of bottle to use when feeding LO. When DS did take a bottle we used Dr Browns and were very happy with them.

  • You can get nipples that fit with the storage bottles or separate bottles. You'll want to get the slow flow nipples; I think medela makes a special one that mimics breastfeeding but I've never tried it. We have had good success with tommee tippee bottles for feedings. I've heard good things about dr browns and the momma bottle, too.

Regarding other accessories, a hands free pumping bra will probably be nice to have. My SIL got me the pumpease bra that goes over any nursing bra. I love it and I haven't even gone back to work yet.

Don't stress yourself too much about getting every little thing before baby comes; you'll want a reason to get out of the house after a few weeks!

I agree with this. I found the medela bottle to have too fast of a flow. We use avent bottles for her to eat out of. I did get the medela kit that has extra bottles and these cook kids with the days of the week on them. I use 4 pump bottles a day, plus some for storage so I have found I needed 8 pump and storage bottles, and 6 eating bottles to wash bottles every other day.
I also agree with the hands free bra bi have simple wishes.
You will also need extra membranes... The little white flap things. After a while they get old and thin and you lose suction. I replace mine monthly. I also keep a spare set in my pump bag bc I have forgotten them or torn one more than once.
You might consider getting 2 sets of pump parts when you go back to work so you can wash every other day. If the hospital you deliver at uses medela pumps, you can ask for a pump and a LC to help you learn how to use it. Then you can take those pump parts home with you and then you'll have 2 sets.
GL! If you have more questions once LO gets here, the breastfeeding board is super helpful, or you can page or pm me any time.

  • I'm with TJ and Dragonfly.

Both of my LO's hated the Medela nipple so I was glad we only had one.  I also saved some of those disposable nipples that came with formula samples and rewashed them.  They would fit on the Medela bottles.  Also, if you buy Dr. Browns, they can be screwed onto the the pumpers too!  I did that all of the time!

  • Thanks everyone! I am intending to pump into the freezer bags too so maybe getting a different type of bottle and nipples that are easy to find will be the way to go since I may have to empty the milk into a bottle from the bag anyway.

Hope to be over here regularly soon.

  • I also second with Erkie said. A hands free pumping bra is a MUST! Also I hope you have some lanolin. Your nips will be SO sore at first but they will get over it.

Also have you bought nursing pads. I prefer the lansinoh ones because they have two adhesive tapes in the back. Medela ones only have one. I tried to use reusable ones but they aren't waterproof and they stuck to my nips.
