Success after IF

Total regression

I don't know what's going on with M, but he has completely regressed in the last several days, back to his super fussy period when he was 6-8 weeks old.

I have been able to put him down for naps very easy - takes 5 minutes and he'd be asleep.  Sometimes he'll wake up at the 30 min mark but I can usually soothe him and he'll go back to sleep for an hour or 2.

Now he is fighting naps with all his might.  Spent 45 mins to get him to sleep, and he wakes up at the 30 minute mark, and I can't get him back to sleep.  And he's super fussy because he's still tired.

The same goes for night time sleep.  DH has been able to get him to sleep in 10 minutes at night; the last 2 nights it's an hour fight.

Moreover, he was sleeping 5-6 hour stretches.  Now he's up every 4hours on the dot.  We tried letting him fuss and see if he'd fall back asleep, but his fussing escalates to the point of crying.  He never used to cry when he woke up MOTN.  He hates the pacifier too so it's hard for us to soothe him without giving him the boob.

All the frustration I experienced back in the fussy 6-8w stage is all coming back to me like a giant wave. I've started crying again (due to frustration and exhaustion). I thought things were supposed to get better, but we are having a HUGE step backwards.

Re: Total regression

  • I'm on mobile so I can't see your ticker and I can't remember exactly how old M is. But there is the 4 month wakeful period. I think it has to do with them becoming more aware of their surroundings and learning so many new things. For E it lasted until 6 months, then things were suddenly miraculously better. Maybe it's time for sleep training? Or moving M to his own room if he isn't already? Just keep hanging in there hon. I know it's hard, but you're doing a great job.
He couldn't have an ear infection could he? I know with E that was her first symptom, screaming when we laid her down and fighting sleep at all costs. It happened a week after a cold which our pedi said was common. GL pb. You will get through this. Huge hugs.

  • TJ had some great ideas. My other thoughts were maybe it is a growth spurt or possibly early teething. I know how frustrating it is when things seem to be moving steadily ahead just to have a regression like this. But it will get better again. I promise. Hang in the hon. (((((hugehugs)))))
