Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Skipping cereal

So we started solids this week! After some trial and error we wound up having a successful round of carrots :)  We skipped the cereal and went straight to veggies... but my question is - I know that the cereals are fortified with iron.  LO is still on breastmilk and now we are starting some veggies, but of course those are not fortified.  Is it recommended to supplement with some additional source of iron (or anything else?) or does the breastmilk have it covered?  I read the back of some rice cereal boxes and they all mentioned how critical it is to add iron to an infants diet... so just wondering what you ladies are doing - recommendations???

  • Yes, you need to start adding some iron rich foods to baby's diet around 6 month as their stores are depleting.  My pedi recommended turkey and egg yolk.

  • Breastmilk iron is really easily absorbed.  They get less from formula.  Veggies have iron as well.  Spinach is a good one.  I'm skipping cereals all together.  Of course they mention how critical it is that they get their processed crap into your baby's diet.
  • I add cereal to her babyfood. I make my own purees for her and add it to thicken it up. You could also keep taking prenatal viramins so she still gets the good vitamins through your milk.

  • The latest recommendation from pedis is to go straight to feeding meats as babies need this iron in addition to breast milk. Iron in red meats is most easily absorbed after BM (more so than in veggies).

  • We have baby on fer in sol iron supplements. By enfamil.
  • We are keeping DD off grains of all kinds. We have a family history of grain intolerance (mostly gluten, but also corn and rice) and her ped said there was absolutely nothing wrong with skipping it and that she will get enough from the veggies we feed her.
