piggyback travel question - fly or drive?

So I have a follow up question after looking at everyone's responses below.  In May we are going to a friend's wedding on Long Island and for us that will be a 4-5 hour drive in our pre-twin era.  Our twins will be 6 months around then, and we plan to drive, mostly because they will have nothing there and we'll have to bring all our supplies with us.

At the end of July we have a close family wedding in Michigan.  Initially I thought we'd fly (the twins would be 8 months old).  Then I was thinking about the amount of stuff we have to lug over there, I thought, forget we'll drive.  There is no nearby car seat, baby stuff rental place, I googled it a few times.

Now, looking at your responses, I'm wondering if we should go back to flying.  It'd be about a 1.5-2 hour flight.  we'd potentially have to bring a place to sleep (pack and plays), car seats, stroller, car seat bases, plus all of our clothes etc.

Do your answers change if the kids are younger (8 months instead of 14 months).  The drive, on google maps, is 8.5 hours.  so I would still say we'd do it in a day, probably would take us 12 hours instead i'm figuring with breaks? Am I underestimating?

 Thanks!

Re: piggyback travel question - fly or drive?

  • We chose flying over driving for all our road trips from the time the boys were 6 months (I think that was our first major one) until they were 3.5. Our trips were mostly in the 600-800 mile range. (The 800 mile one we were going to different states so flying and renting cars would've been pretty expensive.)

This summer when the boys were 3.5 we went from SC to NM so of course we flew for that. It went pretty well but to me, if it's 600 miles or less, driving is preferable, especially for LOs who are younger and need more stuff (strollers, high chairs, PnPs, etc.). We also don't have the money to spend on plane tickets, renting cars, etc., though, unless it's a very occasional thing (like the NM trip was for my sister's wedding). If you have the money for it and would rather fly, go for it, but I think especially for a road trip that's maybe 8 hrs or less, flying to me is actually more of a hassle. (Especially when you factor in that door to door a 2 hr flight is still more time since you have to arrive 60-90 minutes ahead of the flight, factor in travel to and from the airport, getting a rental car, installing car seats in the rental car, packing limitations, renting or borrowing beds and things at the other end ... not that appealing to me.)
