Moms of Twins

I was just thinking about that lovely GD test and how much I am looking forward to it. (insert sarcastic tone here)

I was wondering when your doctor ordered you to take it and did you have to have more than one during the pregnancy? I know I probably should start eating like I have GD but I am having a love affair with carbs. Any input would be great!

Re: Moms of Twins

  • I had mine at 24 weeks and my OB isn't planning to make me take another one. But I only see a regular OB and am low risk except for the fact I'm having twins. Other ladies' experiences might be different.

  • I was 24 weeks and I personally thought that the fruit punch drink for the test was really tasty. It was quick and painless and I just had to take the one. I also had a major love affair with carbs....mmmm delicious delicious carbs.

  • I had mine around 26 weeks. It was pretty painless. The orange drink was a little gross, but it was really cold, which helped. By the end of the hour I had a headache, but the tech advised me to go eat something high in protein right away. That helped a lot.

No GD, I didn't have any diet restrictions during pregnancy.

  • I had mine around 23/24 weeks --- I passed the 1 hour by one point. I didn't change my eating habits whatsoever....the one thing that may have helped me (who knows) -- by the time I actually had the drink, I hadn't eaten in like 5 hours, so it was almost like I fasted, kinda. That was completely unintentional, however...but, whatever works! ;)

  • I took mine at 27w. The nurse told me fewer people throw up with the orange (my choices were orange and fruit punch), so orange it was! It was July and the drink was really cold, which was actually nice. I was allowed to eat breakfast before the test (just no sugary foods, I think I had eggs and bacon), so I really think that helped with the nausea. I never got my number, but I passed and never had to repeat it. GL!

  • Thanks. I dont know what my OB is going to do since I was high risk before getting pregnant. With my first two pregnancies I remember doing it around 26-28 weeks and the drink was orange and make me shaky and full of energy. I passed both of them. I'll have to ask him the next time I go in.
  • I ::think:: I'm supposed to do mine at 24 weeks. I had to take one when I was pregnant with older DS and another while doing fertility treatments. I could not keep it down either time. I think while pregnant it took me 3 tries and during IF it took me twice. I seriously cannot stomach that drink. Both times my numbers were perfect - very low but not low enough to be abnormal. I just can't deal with the taste.
  • Drank the orange drink around 24 weeks.  Got a sonogram during the 1 hour wait and was very dizzy and nauseated while laying on my back for the sonogram, so I turned on my side and took a nap for the rest of the hour.  My results were normal.  That was my only test.

  • I took it at 28w and failed. Mine was diet controlled, no insulin. It can't hurt to start a GD diet before taking the test. Definitely helps you focus on eating healthy. I ate a lot of carbs in the first trimester though because it helped with my nausea.

  • I took it at 26 weeks and easily passed, so no need to repeat.
