Pregnant after a Loss

Betas

Is there any reason I shouldn't ask my doctor to please send me for beta monitoring?  Is it as simple as a blood test?  I feel like I would relax if I knew these counts were doubling as they are supposed to.

With my first pregnancy, I did the first round of prenatal bloodwork last time that essentially confirmed pregnancy and that I should consider a booster shot for measles vaccine.  I never had a second round and therefore never heard about beta levels.

 Any thoughts?

Re: Betas

  • Have you had a loss? It is hard to tell from your post. Typically betas are drawn on ladies who have had a loss(es) or are high risk for some reason or another.

Some doctor's will do betas if your request, all you can do is ask. If it will help you, then there is no harm in trying.

  • I have a love hate relationship with betas. I had two doubling betas with two pregnancies that I ultimately lost. This time I asked them for an extra beta and I spaced them further. I was able to really see the increase which truly have me peace of mind.

  • I am probably not the norm but I would avoid doing betas. I have spent hours googling hcg numbers since I got mine. Darn it!

As someone else mentioned, doubling betas does not necessarily mean no miscarriage. I had a miscarriage with my first pregnancy after having great betas.

  • Betas are fairly routine with those who have had at least two losses and pretty much always done if you've gone through fert treatments. Yes, betas are a simple blood test.

  • I have been in beta hell for the past few weeks. They can bring you a certain amount of comfort if they are rising appropriately but they can also drive you crazy.

  • I would call the office and ask to talk directly to a nurse, mw, or doctor. Explain the situation and ask what they'd recommend. When I called to schedule my first appointment the lady scheduling insisted the office didn't want to see me for several more weeks. When I talked with a nurse a few days later, she looked at my history and the doctor wanted me in for betas ASAP.
