Am I overthinking this?

I'm debating putting a sign/diagram on my dishwasher. MIL mentioned that she cut her finger when she was emptying it. She loaded it the other day and when I emptied it, I noticed she puts the steak knife blades up, throughout the silverware. I always put them pointing down, in the first 'bucket' so that doesn't happen. I know I could just mention it to her, but it got me thinking to right before and after I give birth. There will be MIL, my mom, sister & maybe SIL in my house helping. I swear I'm not OCD and need it loaded a certain way, I just don't want people cutting their fingers if they're trying to help me out. Am I just being neurotic?

Re: Am I overthinking this?

  • I am totally neurotic when it comes to the dishwasher. That said I always leave all silverware pointed up, but we never put steak knives in the dishwasher. If they are carbon steel, eventually they will break. Anywho, we just hand wash those. But if someone else is cleaning for me I try hard to not worry so much about it. Seems weird your mil loaded it that way and wasn't cognizant enough to be careful while unloading.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

  • I put all knives blade down, everything else opposite. My dh just throws it in however. I would just talk to her.

Ours our stainless (I had to check) so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I think she was unloading it after I had ran it and is used to what she does at home so she assumed they'd be the same way. Who really knows? Thanks, ladies. I'll just mention it and hope she pays more attention (and everyone else).

  • I'm sure your MIL will be more careful from now on, and no doubt your lady friends who come to help will have encountered dishwashers before. For me, it's so hard accepting people's help when they do things differently than myself, but no doubt in the end it'll totally be worth it! Let them DIY if they have any questions, they'll ask. Later, when your kids are up and running about and knives pointing up in the dishwasher becomes a safety issue for them, that might be a good time to make a diagram for any helpers, but until then maybe just let it go...
    All the best to you!!!!
  • I'd just say something nicely and then thank your lucky stars you have a MIL who is capable of manual labor and doesn't expect to be waited on hand and foot while at your house :)

I thank them all the time. She is a saint & a blessing.

  • I wouldn't make a diagram. I would let other people load the dishwasher their own way, unless there's something they may be ruining. Unless the person really wants some tips, they might be less likely to help if they think it is causing you trouble.
