Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Gag reflex-help!

LO will crush purees and stage 2 foods like there's no tomorrow, but when I introduce any type of chunk to his food, instant gag and vomit. I am really frustrated. At 9 month appointment, Dr. said to go at DS pace with purees and stage 2, but here we are one month later with the same results. I am worried as we approach the 1yr mark. FTM and have no idea how to get him past this. He will feed himself puffs, yogurt bites and gerber organic white cheddar puffs, but that's it. I feel like I am failing. He has 6 teeth, so I know he can chew.

What should I do? TIA

listen to your PD and quit worrying.. our lil man couldnt even eat puffs without gaggin at that stage and now at 11 months tomorrow he is eating up a storm and hasnt barfed in almost a month.. we thickened up the purees with atmeal and made oatmeal thicker and then he just stopped barfing at small lumps. Moneky see monkey do and making yum yum noises when he looked like he was gonna gag helped to get him past that too. he eats scrambled egg, toast, biscuits cheese and alsorts of stuff now with no problem at all.

just be patient he is doing fine and so are you...

  • Are you just making his purees chunky or offering him chunks of 'real' food? DS couldn't handle chunky purees but he has had no problems with cut up table food. He would gag at first but now he hardly ever gags. Start with something soft but not slimy like pieces of bread, soft cooked veggies, or diced cheese.

The reason babies gag on food is because it pushes the food back to the front of their mouth so they can re chew it. It's how they learn how big of a bite they can swallow. It can definitely be scary and it sounds like your LO has a more sensitive gag reflex than most if he is throwing up. Just keep trying and he will get the hang of it!

  • My LO gagged a ton when we first started feeding him foods. But it didn't seem to bother him. He'd gag up the food, and then just reach for more. I feel like gagging is a normal part of learning to eat just as falling is a normal part of learning to walk.
  • Thanks for the advice and reassurance ladies. Being a FTM, I'm always second guessing my abilities and what's normal and what's not normal. Ugh, I only want what's best for little man. Think I'll start slowly thickening everything and sneak a few very mushy chunks in over time. Right now he gags with finger food mushy veggies or even slight chunks in the puree. I have to stop being deterred and remain vigilant in my efforts. This could get very messy, but I guess keeping at it is key. Thank you!

This exactly!! DS gagged and then threw up for 2 weeks straight but then kept reaching for more. I took him to the pedi because I thought there was something really wrong with him! All normal!
  • We are in the same exact boat! Gagging and puking too! I hear ya when you say its frustrating. I am so glad to hear that I am not the only FTM feeling like this because I really want the best too for my DD too and  it has been a hard one to figure out. My little will literally turn her head if I even offer her anything that isn't a puff, cherrio or yogurt.. And table food, forget it! Not interested! But loves her purees. I thank you for asking about this and the posts have helped me too! Just know you are not alone :)
  • Thank GOD i'm not the only one!!!! I was so worried that my LO wasn't eating right.  He can eat puffs, small chunks of apples (really soft), and those baby cheeto things..but thats about it -- other than Purees.  He just gagged.  He gags on the yogurt melts too -- but I don't blame him -- the texture after they melt is alittle weird to me.... I guess I will just keep giving things??
